“We can manage what we measure, but what we mostly measure are things like money or speed…What we can't really measure is quality. And quality is about emotions. And emotions can be sensed most sensitively with expressions.” Steen Strand and I had a great conversation with Boone Ashworth at WIRED for his article “These Smart Glasses Will Read Your Emotions and Watch What You Eat” Just to be clear, we are measuring emotional responses, that is, the actions that result from felt experiences. This is only with the explicit consent of the wearer. Privacy concerns are paramount, as with all health-related data. To those who want to shut things down before they get started, I suggest they consider this: Imagine modern healthcare if fear had stopped people from donating their precious time, tissue samples, or even genetic information for the good of mankind. The pandemic would have been very different, and those who would have suffered even more would have been the most disadvantaged. Caution is fine, but let’s remember that the future is built by optimists. I recommend that anyone interested in the science of emotions should read the excellent work of Lisa Feldman Barrett e.g., How Emotions Are Made and Seven and a Half Lessons About the Brain.

📢 Steen Strand Joins Emteq Labs as CEO: A New Era for Wearable Technology Steen Strand’s appointment as CEO signals a significant new phase for Emteq Labs. A seasoned entrepreneur with a successful background in consumer-focused smart eyewear, Steen now leads Emteq Labs into a new era with the launch of Sense—an AI-powered eyewear platform designed to revolutionize multiple industries. Emteq Labs is driven by a clear mission: to enhance understanding of human behavior, improve communication, personalize experiences, and improve health outcomes. Why Is This Important? While companies like Apple, Fitbit, and Oura have poured billions into devices measuring health through metrics such as heart rate and brain activity, these signals remain invisible to the people around us. Human beings, however, rely on non-verbal cues—especially facial expressions and body language—to interpret emotions and intentions. This is where Emteq Labs differentiates itself. Our technology focuses on facial expression analytics, enabling real-time insights into emotional states and behaviors, setting us apart in the wearable technology market. Broadening Our Vision Initially, Emteq Labs concentrated on research and medical applications based on our founder’s interest in facial paralysis. With Steen’s arrival, we’ve expanded our vision to embrace a platform-based approach, partnering with organizations across diverse sectors. This strategy helps scale our solutions, reduce costs, and ensure that our technology remains accessible to those who need it most. A Legacy of Innovation Emteq Labs is built on a foundation of innovation. Our founder, Charles, holds 27 patents, and our CTO, Hristijan Gjoreski, is ranked among the top 2% of researchers on Google Scholar for his pioneering work in AI wearables. Together, we are tapping into four major opportunities: consumer products, health and wellness, content personalization, and human-computer interaction. > Our Core Areas of Focus We are collaborating with leaders across four key sectors to bring our technology to life: 🧠 Mental health: A ‘Fitbit for feelings,’ tracking emotional well-being. ⚖️ Weight management: Real-time feedback to improve dietary habits. ✨ Assistive devices: Hands-free control of devices for enhanced accessibility. 😃 Personalized experiences: Adaptive digital content that optimizes for positive emotions. CEO at Emteq Labs

I’m thrilled to share that I’m joining Emteq Labs as CEO, working alongside visionary founder Charles Nduka to lead a company whose groundbreaking technology first inspired me while I was heading the AR eyewear division at Snap. Emteq’s revolutionary eyewear technology will meaningfully improve lives and I’m eager to be part of this exciting journey. Today, over 1 billion people suffer from obesity and nearly 1 billion from mental health disorders, yet the real-world data we need to understand these issues is frustratingly out of reach. For example, diagnosing depression still relies on a simple questionnaire. Wearables like FitBit, Oura, and Apple Watch have already revolutionized how we monitor two pillars of wellness—physical fitness and sleep. Now, it’s time to bring the same innovation to the other two pillars—diet and emotions. As it turns out, our faces provide the essential data we need. For nearly a decade, Charles and his team at Emteq have tackled this challenge with scientific rigor, earning 27 patents and publishing 28 peer-reviewed papers along the way. Their groundbreaking achievement is Sense: an AI-powered eyewear platform that delivers transformative health and behavioral insights. Equipped with cutting-edge optical flow sensors, Sense captures facial expressions with lab-level accuracy—whether you're at home, at work, or out with friends. These sensors are compact, contactless, efficient, and require minimal data and computing power, making them ideal for lightweight smart eyewear. Leveraging proprietary AI algorithms, Sense translates this rich data into actionable insights, setting a new standard in wearable health technology. The possibilities are profound, spanning both wellness and medicine from assessment to therapeutic intervention, drug development, or simply improving one’s wellbeing. Research led by Psychiatry Professor James Stone showed that Sense distinguishes between depressed and non-depressed people with only 30 minutes of data. And Sense accurately measures the food you consume, your eating habits, and your physical activities. The quality of real-world data it provides for diet and emotional health versus other wearables is transformative. Because of the many applications for this technology and our belief that expert practitioners are an important element in care, Sense is a B2B open platform. Our mission is to enhance the outcomes of our commercial partners through superior data. We’re eager to partner with organizations and researchers ready to harness the power of our platform. If your application could benefit, visit us at emteqlabs.com I’m honored to join Charles and the team on this ambitious mission, and I’m excited to help Emteq push the boundaries of health and wellness to improve lives. Steen

Mind blown! 🤯 Just watched OpenAI's latest demo and wow, the rate of progress is incredible! For the visually impaired, AI will offer super powers. It’s an open secret that Sam Altman is working with Jony Ive on a new device. I wonder if it’s glasses? 🤔 Imagine combining personalised AI with smart glasses that not only see what you see but also pick up on your emotions by monitoring your facial expressions and head movements. For those times when you're alone and quiet, these glasses could notice if you haven't smiled in a while—potentially offering support when it's most needed. And with the obesity epidemic, think about the possibilities for nutrition and health: glasses that identify what you’re eating, count the calories, and even notice if you're eating too quickly (proven to cause increased calorie intake), helping you manage your eating habits better. For a surgeon performing a tricky procedure, the glasses might provide timely assistance if frustration is detected. The potential to change lives with this tech is incredible. If you’re intrigued by #AI for good or interested in seeing what’s next with wearable AI, or are a researchers interested in improving lives, follow emteq labs. 🤓 #AI #Innovation #SmartGlasses #FutureTech #EmotionAI
