Not using someone’s preferred pronoun can create a hostile, discriminatory environment. Particularly where the language used can accommodate such a diverse range of pronouns, like English. Today promotes the right for people, whose language includes gendered and non-gendered pronouns, to use and ask for others to use their preferred pronouns. As professional interpreters we would always respect a service user and professional’s pronoun preference and interpret accordingly. According to the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID), 1 in 5 people (or 12 million people) in the UK are Deaf or hard of hearing. Many people with hearing loss will rely on closed captioning (subtitles) to access audio-visual content but there are estimated to be around 151,000 BSL users in the UK, not including professional BSL users and interpreters. BSL is not a signed version of written or spoken English, as its vocabulary and syntax are different. This means that for many people with hearing loss, subtitles or written English for BSL users are not an adequate alternative. BSL users in the UK can face social exclusion as a direct result of linguistic exclusion, negatively impacting their access to healthcare and other services. Get BSL interpreting on demand whenever you need it at Enable2. Get in touch for more details and to be connected to an experienced BSL interpreter at info@enable2.com. #BSLinterpreting #BSL #nhsinterpreting

We can all play a part this month, and beyond, in helping people to speak up and feel confident they will be listened to. People-centred interpreting services play a valuable role in supporting people of all cultures and language backgrounds to do just this. This national campaign highlights the need for organisations, groups, institutions and all employers to foster a culture of listening to their employees to encourage real communication. Freedom to Speak Up Guardians support workers to speak up when they feel that they are unable to in other ways and there are over 1,000 Freedom to Speak Up Guardians in the NHS and independent sector organisations, national bodies and elsewhere.
