The ETC's Director, Ita Kettleborough, spoke on edie’s Sustainability Uncovered podcast last week. Ita discussed the progress and challenges of the global energy transition, addressing common misconceptions around renewable energy. Ita's intervention in the latest episode joined an excellent lineup, including Woochong Um from The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), and Peter Fisher of Bennetts Associates. All insightful discussions on sustainable development and low-carbon solutions. Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/eBFg9mvN

Reaching net-zero carbon emissions from the harder-to-abate sectors is technically & financially possible by mid-century
About us
We know that economic growth and climate action can be achieved together. The Energy Transitions Commission was convened to help identify pathways for change in our energy systems to ensure both better growth and a better climate. This is inspired by the work of the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate and its flagship project the New Climate Economy. The Commissioners bring a remarkable range of viewpoints and extraordinary depth of experience. They come from across the energy spectrum, including investors, incumbent energy companies, industry disruptors, equipment suppliers, non-profit organizations, advisors, and academics. Some have sat at high-level negotiating tables on climate change deals. What they share is a progressive attitude to reforming the energy system. We aim to accelerate change towards low-carbon energy systems that enable robust economic development and limit the rise in global temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius. We will provide decision-makers with insights and options for action at local and/or sector level. This will stem from objective research and wide engagement with actors in the energy system. We hope you find the work of the Commission interesting and insightful.

To meet net-zero trajectories, the size of the grid will need to grow by over 50% by 2050, from around 68 million km of grid in 2023, to a range of around 110–200 million km in 2050, with growth consistent across all regions. Governments and industry should implement a strategic vision for grids, address slow permitting & approvals, address skill and material gaps and reform financing to ensure both transmission and distribution grids are scaled up around the world. Governments, investors, corporates & civil society must work together to overcome barriers to scaling massive clean electrification. Amongst six critical actions for enabling the scale up in electricity deployment needed to reach #netzero, the first action is for countries to set clear, quantitative targets aimed at electrifying their economies (e.g., electric vehicle sales) and decarbonisation of their power systems (e.g., wind and solar capacity). This should also include targets for the phase-out of fossil technologies (e.g., bans on internal combustion engine vehicles). To accelerate global decarbonisation, linear fossil dominated grids must evolve to become modern, clean and more flexible, enabling increased generation options and a wider range of use cases. As a result, both transmission and distribution grids must be substantially scaled up in every region of the world. While the optimisation of grids - including improving efficiency of power flows and optimising siting of generation and storage on the system - is critical, this will not eliminate the need to build new grids. Policymakers and industry must take targeted action now and accelerate the #gridbuild. Download the full analysis: https://lnkd.in/ezmCwnbh

The Business Sweden roundtable, "Decarbonizing cities – addressing emissions from energy, transport, and industry" at #ClimateWeekNYC last Tuesday highlighted the necessary implementation of innovative transport solutions and the scaling up of renewable energies to provide low-carbon energy consumption in cities. ETC Deputy Director Mike Hemsley participated in a roundtable alongside other industry experts including Mattias Frumerie (UN Climate Change), Henrik Tegnér (AFRY), and ETC members like Martin Pei (SSAB), amongst others.

Reuters Sustainability Europe 2024 kicks off today, uniting 500+ leaders from across government, corporate and finance to discuss ways to drive climate action! Tomorrow at 10 UKT, Elena Pravettoni, the ETC's Head of Analysis, will moderate a panel on "the role of carbon offsets in transition plans" to explore the current state of the carbon offset market and the advantages and disadvantages of utilising carbon offsets on the road to #netzero. In 2022, the ETC released our report, Mind the Gap, which outlined the role of Carbon Dioxide Removals in meeting global climate objectives. Even given the fastest feasible path of emissions reductions, the world needs carbon removals to limit cumulative net emissions and help decarbonise all sectors by mid-century. In this panel, Elena will be joined by Aisha Rodriguez (VCMI) and Magnus Drewelies (CEEZER). Read our insights on how Carbon Dioxide Removals complement deep decarbonisation: https://lnkd.in/dyEAyMrh

The Path to 1.5°C: High-Ambition NDCs are Key The next round of NDCs, due at COP30 in Brazil, will be a decisive moment for global climate action. Our report on #CredibleContributions underscores that existing progress and industry commitments mean we can achieve almost three times the current mitigation impact by 2035. But only if governments set clear, ambitious targets backed by robust policies. At #Mission2025, we’re uniting leaders to advocate for NDCs that serve as credible, investable plans – especially in emerging markets. Let’s turn ambition into action and secure a sustainable future. Our #TransitionFinance report sets out two different forms of financial flow: Capital investment & concessional/grant payments. The latter are needed for climate objectives in mid/low-income countries. Payments for early coal phase-out, ending deforestation and carbon removals will be required because there is no economic incentive to do these things – but they are critical to reach net-zero by mid-century. There is enough money globally to finance the #EnergyTransition but we must ensure that the business case is clear. Read the full analysis: https://lnkd.in/dDSc6Par #ClimateWeekNYC

At the ETC we know a net-zero future is possible. Why? Primarily, because the key technologies and business solutions necessary are either already available or almost within reach. With the cost of renewables falling rapidly, generating clean energy from wind & solar is cheaper than fossil fuels across most of the world. Thanks to low-cost batteries for energy storage, we can build flexible, integrated electricity systems that allow us more control over where and when we use our energy. Watch the video to find out what barriers we must overcome today to unlock a cleaner tomorrow: https://lnkd.in/gBbRNJq5

On Tuesday, ETC Deputy Director Mike Hemsley participated in the discussion session, "High-level Dialogue: Doubling Down on Seizing the Efficiency Opportunity" hosted by RMI and the International Energy Agency (IEA) for #ClimateWeekNYC. The event brought together private sector and civil society leaders to discuss insights on doubling energy efficiency progress by 2030, a COP28 commitment. It was great to hear opening remarks from ETC Commissioner and knowledge partner, Jon Creyts.
