About us
The Englefield Estate is a long established, family-owned business based in West Berkshire managing a diverse range of land and property interests, in both rural and urban areas. We take pride in our heritage, including the contribution we make to the local economy, the environment and local communities. The Estate manages 14,000 acres of mainly rural land and property in West Berkshire and Hampshire between Reading, Newbury and Basingstoke. At the heart of the Estate lies Englefield House, a large Grade II* Listed building that has been home to the Benyon family for many generations. With more than 600 properties to care for, we are hands on in the management of our farming, forestry, residential and commercial property interests and take a long-term view of good stewardship, investment and building strong local relationships.

The team at Five a Day in Englefield Village work hard throughout the year to improve the wellbeing of visitors by providing outdoor learning opportunities for adults and children in a therapeutic environment, as well as corporate team building days. In 2023 it gained charity status and continues its efforts as a not-for-profit community supported project, making a positive impact on those who visit. On #InternationalDayOfCharity we want to celebrate and share some of the outstanding and important work carried out in 2024 at the gardens, which is driven by the dedicated volunteers… 🥕 543 children from local junior schools and 254 children from across the scouting and guiding organisations have visited Five a Day, taking part in horticultural education sessions where they can learn all about the garden, where their food comes from and how to grow plants sustainably. 🍅 Seven corporate volunteering sessions have been hosted, bringing 87 new volunteers to Five a Day. 🥔 A weekly group called Thyme Together continues to run, where elderly people can come together and enjoy the garden with the help of a trained Social and Therapeutic Horticulture practitioner. 🙌 The dedicated team of volunteers who maintain the garden, collectively gave 1,653 hours of their time in the first half of this year! Meet Fin Lace, the newest Forester in our Forestry Team.🌳 Fin’s first taste of forestry and woodland management took place aged 16 when he came to the Estate for work experience during his summer holiday. In 2022 after completing his GCSE’s, he joined as a Trainee Forester and in the last two years has completed practical training with our Forestry Team and courses at agricultural colleges around the UK, including BCA (Berkshire College of Agriculture). We are pleased to share the news that Fin has passed his assessments and joins us as a full-time Forester, working alongside an experienced team. Forestry Manager Richard Edwards said: “Fin does everything with a smile on his face, he’s a hard worker and always keen to improve.” To read more about Fin’s journey to becoming a Forester, click here: https://lnkd.in/e8krDYPY #Forester #CareersInForestry #ForestryManagement #EnglefieldEstate #WestBerkshire

Our Head Gamekeeper, David, turned his hand to beekeeping in 2022 after receiving his first beehive as a Christmas gift from his wife, Ellen. 🐝 Since then, David has grown the apiary from two hives to seven, with well over 250,000 honeybees in his care. On World Honeybee Day, David’s shared an update on the honeybees and how weather conditions have affected them this year… “The wet and cool weather that we’ve experienced for most of this year has meant that there have been few flying bees and therefore fruit trees have not been pollinated. It has also meant that swarming, which is when the old queen and some of the other honeybees leave the colony to find somewhere new to live, happened a month later than it would typically.” On a sweeter note, David explained that “honey production has been good, with the new colonies producing around 20lbs of honey, and the established ones producing around 100lbs. Some of these will be left with their honey so they have a good supply during the winter.” The beehives on the Estate are placed in rich areas of wildflowers which we plant with wild bird seed crops. This encourages and allows for pollination and honey production to continue into the autumn when all other crops are long finished. #WorldHoneyBeeDay #BeeKeeping #BeeKeeper #HoneyBees #EnglefieldEstate #Berkshire #WestBerks

More than 70% of the Englefield Estate comprises farmland which is managed by Estate colleagues and experienced farm tenants who take care of crops, livestock, as well as the wildlife that inhabits it. 🌱 Our Head of Rural Property and Land, James Meade, captured these shots of Farm Worker Mick Davies, who has worked for the Estate for over 50 years, topping a field on our Home Farm earlier in the year. Grass topping is carried out to improve grass quality, encourage growth and to prevent weed seed formation and distribution into soil. 🚜 This Farm Worker Appreciation Day, we'd like to extend our thanks to Mick and the Farming Team at Englefield, and all agricultural workers across the UK. Thank you for your hard work, your commitment to farming, growing crops, caring for livestock, the environment and land in our care and - of course - producing our food. #FarmWorkerAppreciationDay #Farming #EnglefieldEstate #Agriculture

It's wonderful and hugely rewarding to see the positive impact the new ponds at Mayridge Farm are having on numbers of visiting and habiting invertebrates and amphibians. Over the past month, we've recorded sightings of diving water beetles, broad-bodied chaser dragonfly and linnets drinking from the ponds. We've also begun to see plants colonising the margins of the pond, providing shelter, perching and resting sites for wildlife. Swipe to see videos and photographs of the ponds 👉 #WorldNatureConservationDay #MayridgeFarm #Ponds #Nature #Environment #Habitats #Wildlife

🌲Forestry Team Field Trip 🏞️ Here is an update from Rob Coltman, Senior Forestry Consultant: “The forestry team visited Englefield Estate for a day of lively debate and bad tree puns. Richard Edward kindly hosted the event and had previously employed Maydencroft's Assistant Forestry Consultant, Joe Western, on the estate. The day covered a range of fascinating subjects including veteran tree management, cricket bat willow, marketing of large diameter oak, woodland reinstatement on quarried land, experimental tree species mixtures, and open space management. The day concluded with a delicious lunch at the estate café, which was enjoyed by all. We look forward to the next one!” Pictures were taken by Ted Fisher. #ForestryConsultant #EnglefieldEstate #VeteranTreeManagement #CricketBatWillow #WoodlandReinstatement #TreeSpeciesMixtures #OpenSpaceManagement #ForestryEvent #TreePuns #EstateCafe #forestryteam #teammaydencroft
