On Monday 4th of March, the British Embassy Brussels, Port of Antwerp-Bruges and MCA (Maritime Campus Antwerp) hosted the 'UK-BE Maritime Innovation Day: Autonomous Vessels & Smart Shipping' in the Antwerp Porthouse. This event gathered the UK 🇬🇧 and Belgian 🇧🇪 Maritime ⚓ Industries focusing on Maritime Autonomous Systems for the first time. 📢 In an afternoon of collaboration, an expert panel (Diederik Wéreau, Catrien Scheers, Alexandra Beaumont and Matthew Palmer, CEng IMechE) discussed ways to move forward in the UK and BE after the signing of the MoU on Maritime Autonomous systems earlier in 2023. ✨ 10 start- and scale-ups companies (Ninety Percent of Everything (90POE), ACUA Ocean, SEAFAR, e-BO Enterprises, SeaBot Maritime, Ensemble Analytics, JET Connectivity, SEA-KIT International, HydroSurv and Lupovis) from the UK and Belgium took the stage to present their maritime innovations for the future to the public. 📢 The final session of the day (Iwona Wilk, Cédric Vermeulen, Neale Ryan and Richard Wigley) illustrated the ample support available to companies looking to scale and finance their operations in the UK. 🎤 We want to thank Erwin Verstraelen, Chris Barton CMG, Chloe Yarrien and Antoon Van Coillie for their insightful words addressing the Belgian and UK public. A special thanks goes to Justin Atkin for being the moderator of the afternoon. UK-Be Maritime Innovation Day Navigating the future of port operations requires a wave of talent equipped with new skills, amidst a landscape where skilled labor is too scarce to meet the increasingly complexed requirements for port operations. The industry must address this skill shortage head-on, enhancing role attractiveness to entice new talent into the industry. To explore these critical issues, the Maritime Innovation event will convene experts from both the UK and Belgian side. It aims to strengthen partnerships and alliances to shape policy and promote the advancement of emerging technologies. To showcase the innovation in the UK on this topic, 8 UK Companies will be presenting their solutions in front of an audience of Belgian stakeholders. 📍 Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Belgium 🗓 4 March 2024

🤔 I already have an Human Resource Management System (HRMS) system, why do I need Athena? Athena is not an HRMS and will not replace your HRMS. Athena is a specialised operational scheduling tool that focuses on solving the intrinsic problems faced by operations workforce scheduling teams. In fact, Athena is specifically designed to get more out of your HRMS, by digitalising workforce management processes that previously were so complex that they were ‘solved’ with Excel. So why doesn’t my HRMS work for our operations team? HRMS are designed for coffee shops and hotels, not for complex operations. So HRMS fail to satisfy the requirements of operational teams, caused by some of the following: 👩🔧 Multiple labour pools and business units 🛠 Multi-skilled operatives ⏰ Complexed shift rules 🙃 Complexed overtime rules 📉 Limited data to prioritise shifts when facing personnel/skill deficits 👨💻 No integration with operational platforms that determine shift demand 👀 Limited forecasting to understand the demand for shifts in the future 🔧 Skills management and compliance is not integrated into scheduling ⛑ Limited operational safety and training analytics Athena is specifically designed solve the difficulties that traditional HRMS cannot address such as scheduling, timesheets, and skills management. This data is then integrated back into the HRMS for payroll and other financial reporting such as cost coding.
