We're excited to announce that "Quadrant House" has been shortlisted for the Architects’ Journal Retrofit & Reuse Awards, under the Adaptive Reuse, Future Reuse and Decarbonisation category. Quadrant House is a 1970s building located in Caterham, purchased by Tandridge Council to preserve space for local businesses. The building was dilapidated, environmentally inefficient, and an eyesore on the high street. Coast to Capital funding enabled its transformation. The project aims were to support local economic growth and achieve an exemplar sustainable retrofit. The team worked collaboratively with the client, refining the refurbishment brief, together setting ambitious environmental goals. Engagement with stakeholders (including; office and retail unit tenants, building managers and marketing agents) shaped the proposals. Key project measures: retained 1970s concrete frame and fabric; insulating building shell throughout; new double-glazed windows/doors; LED lighting, occupancy and daylight control; VRF (heating/cooling) system; new compliant escape staircases; durable and high recycled content materials chosen; new green wall, fed from roof runoff, boosts biodiversity + improves air quality. Innovative sustainability strategies prioritised a data-led approach, shifting from heating-led to an all-electric cooling-led building, using a ‘fabric first’ approach to reduce cooling loads. Flexible design allows for future adaptation of interior spaces and systems ensuring long-term usability, aligning with long-life/loose-fit principles The completed project excels at delivering the brief, transforming the 1970s structure into a modern, futureproof, decarbonised building at the heart of the community, which has revitalised the high street and made local people proud of what the project achieves for Caterham. About us
Our well-loved and well-used buildings and places are created from listening and understanding client and stakeholder needs. Various forms of collaboration and co-production are at the heart of our practice. We enjoy the messiness and richness of these processes. They make each project unique. Our key strength is our dual experience as both public realm designers and architects. Erect’s buildings and spaces have won high-profile awards and our public realm spaces have featured as good practice case studies by CABE and in the Supplementary Planning Guidance: Shaping Neighbourhoods. We challenge standards through innovation and research and explore this in evidence-based work. We have been engaged in pilot projects such as Camden Active Spaces and Lambeth Early Action Partnership, which probe the potential role of design in improving public health and wellbeing.

Erect Architecture reposted this
We are excited that one of our recent projects “Quadrant House” has been shortlisted for the Architects’ Journal Retrofit & Reuse Awards, under the Adaptive Reuse, Future Reuse and Decarbonisation category. Erect Architecture led the project and we worked closely with them and the main contractor Thomas Sinden Limited to implement best practice retrofit measures. The project transformed the 1960s structure into a modern, decarbonised building, revitalising the high street and making the local community and Tandridge District Council proud. We’ll share more about this project shortly. With thanks to Charles Hosea and Thomas Sinden Limited for the fantastic photos. ⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯ #BTPEngineering Bringing buildings to life with expertly designed mechanical, electrical and renewable energy systems

What do teenage girls want from their local parks? We're currently working on an exciting project to improve Memorial Park in London Borough of Waltham Forest. As part of the design process we are engaging different community groups, to understand what matters most to them and what changes they want to see in the park. Our latest journal post reflects on the perspective of teenage girls and specifically poses the question "What do teenage girls want from their local parks?" Let us know what you think and join the debate below Journal Post: https://lnkd.in/ednQwQKH

This is wonderful, thanks Sophie Thompson and LDA Design for showcasing a case study of Vauxhall Walk amongst so much fantastic work, a really positive stride forward. #highwaysgreening #highways #vauxhallwalk #landscapedesign
A long post this one to share news of a new report authored by LDA Design and published by London Borough of Camden and Islington Council which finds that climate resilience and social #equity are driving best practice in the redesign of streets and highways, making them safer, healthier and addressing unequal access. For too long, traffic movement and parking have been prioritised above quality of place and #wellbeing. ‘Highways Greening – Best Practice and Lessons Learnt’ https://lnkd.in/e8aRBPWF finds that the tide is turning. The report draws on #Camden and #Islington’s experience of jointly delivering a #HighwaysGreeningAccelerator programme, targeting the areas of greatest #community need. It also highlights best practice in the #planning, #design and #delivery of #greeninfrastructure on highways and streets around the UK and in #Vancouver, #Antwerp and #Lyon. Support came from the Department for Housing & Communities (now the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government), the National Trust, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Mayor of London. Full story here ➡ https://lnkd.in/egVHjXNW Report here ➡ https://lnkd.in/e8aRBPWF 💬 Sophie Thompson, a director and #publicrealm lead at LDA Design said: “This report aims to educate and inspire those involved in planning, designing, and delivering public realm. Even small street greening projects can provide significant benefits. It is also clear that when projects are interdisciplinary and prioritise the #community, they maximise benefits in #biodiversity, flood resilience, active travel, play and sociability.” You can find the full set of guidance documents from the Accelerator programme on the Urban Design Learning (UDL) website: https://lnkd.in/eyuDxVRG A big thank you to all the people and organisations that contributed to the training sessions and case studies, including Arup Robert Bray Associates Greater London Authority Enfield Council City of London Corporation Erect Architecture SMALLWOOD ARCHITECTS LTD Spring Gardens Nursery SHAPE Architecture Streets Ahead Cityscapes Cardiff Council Urban Movement City of Vancouver Stad Antwerpen Métropole de Lyon 👏 Great work by LDA Design's Sophie Thompson Ellie Buckell Stella Bland and Lee White.
