Our Research & Policy Officer Suchismita Majumdar started the #londonchallengepovertyweek with a meeting with Debbie Weekes-Bernard to discuss issues of #childpoverty. Thanks 4in10 - London's Child Poverty Network for organising the meeting!
For London Challenge Poverty Week, I am reflecting on the difficult financial situation many Londoners find themselves in as they grapple with the harsh impact of poverty. Read my article which sets out how the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan and I are working hard with partners across London to expand and continue the vital work of supporting Londoners struggling with financial pressures and ensuring all our communities have access to the financial support and advice they need.

Challenging poverty must start with recognition that everyone should have adequate income to live on. In 2021/22 those in the 90th net income percentile in London took home 10 times more than those in the 10th net income percentile (source: Trust for London) #PovertyFreeLondon #LDNChallengePoverty

With these scrapped, the pressure on families would ease a lot!
As children across the county go back to school, it’s the UK government’s first week back too, and we’ve made Keir Starmer a to-do list. Top priority: reduce child poverty now to create lasting change. Only by breaking down barriers can we help children thrive in the UK. We've always fought for children's rights, like when our campaign for better nutrition led to the 1944 Education Act and free school milk/meals. Governments have listened before and should do so again for a better future. Here's hoping for a positive report card this term!
