Airlines may have to tell passengers the environmental impact of the flights they book under new proposals from the UK regulator. The Civil Aviation Authority said consumers should be able to make more informed travel choices when booking flights and package holidays. Passengers would need “accurate, understandable, and accessible” measures, and would probably be told the carbon impact of their individual flights in terms of the CO2 emitted, the CAA said, launching a consultation on the plans at the Farnborough airshow. The CAA director of policy, Tim Johnson, said: “Providing consumers with accessible, transparent and accurate environmental information is essential to making more informed travel choices. “Our new proposals aim to standardise this information across all platforms, enabling passengers to more easily compare the environmental impact of their flights. This initiative is a significant step towards greater transparency and improved sustainability in the aviation industry.” The policy could come into effect from 2025. #Sustainability #CORSIA #ClimateAction #CarbonReduction #Airlines #MRVHUB #ETSAERO

Momentum is building in the Asia-Pacific region to enhance the sustainability of the aviation sector, with a particular focus on sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). Major competitors Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on various sustainability initiatives. Vietnam Airlines has also joined IATA's CO2 Connect platform and recently conducted its first SAF flight, using a blend produced and supplied by Neste’s Singapore refinery. Dubai-based Emirates has also received its initial SAF shipment in Singapore from Neste. Additionally, Air New Zealand has acquired 500,000 litres of SAF produced in China by Hong Kong energy company EcoCeres and blended by ExxonMobil. Korean Air is also expanding its cargo SAF program through a new partnership with global logistics company CEVA. The collaboration between Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines was formalized by their chief executives at IATA’s recent annual general meeting in Dubai. This agreement underscores both airlines' commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and driving the industry's transition to more sustainable operations. #Sustainability #CORSIA #ClimateAction #CarbonReduction #Airlines #MRVHUB #ETSAERO

South Africa has the potential to be a key supplier of SAF. Here is why. Feedstock Potential:  South Africa has an abundance of feedstocks from which SAF can be derived including sugarcane low carbon by-products, and biomass from cleared invasive alien plants (IAPs). With respect to IAPs, harvesting them will come with other environmental benefits such as improved biodiversity and water security. In all cases, no feedstocks would compete with food production for land or water use in line with the ICAO sustainability framework. Significant Production Capacity:  The WWF estimates that South Africa has the potential to produce between 3.2 and 4.5 billion liters of SAF annually. This will be more than meet domestic fuel demand (1.8 billion liters) and present an export opportunity, where policies will be central for realization. Achieving production at the higher range of potential would require the co-development of a green hydrogen capability. Existing Refinery Infrastructure:  South Africa has existing refinery infrastructure which should be explored for brownfield investments—plant conversions or co-processing. Experience:  South Africa has long experience in synthetic fuel production, particularly the Fischer-Tropsch method. Moreover, the country’s robust academic and research institutions also have a history of supporting innovations and technology for fuel production. It’s the time we see polices to enable their role in SAF deployment. Strategic Geographic Location:  South Africa’s airports, particularly OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and Cape Town International Airport, serve as important hubs for connecting flights within Africa and to other parts of the world. #Sustainability #CORSIA #ClimateAction #CarbonReduction #Airlines #MRVHUB #ETSAERO

The collective aspirational global goal agreed by governments six months ago to reduce CO2 emissions in international aviation by 2030 through the use of sustainable aviation fuels and lower carbon fuels is impossible to achieve or at best highly ambitious, Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA has claimed. He also rejected a claim by a UAE government representative that IATA, along with other industry stakeholders, had pushed for the target at ICAO’s third Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3) held last November, also in Dubai. Achieving the target required governments to deliver concrete measures to facilitate the exponential ramp-up of SAF they were calling for, said Walsh. He said that in the past, the industry had been rightly criticised for setting environmental targets that it could not and did not achieve. Meanwhile, IATA expects the sector’s net profits to reach $30.5 billion in 2024, up from $27.4 billion last year. #Sustainability #CORSIA #ClimateAction #CarbonReduction #Airlines #MRVHUB #ETSAERO
