  • World Obesity Day Europe 2025 highlights the importance of systems change in addressing obesity. From policy to practice, EASO leads in advancing scientific understanding and clinical care. We were delighted to collaborate in an excellent World Obesity Day event in Brussels within the EU Parliament for #WODEurope. The focus of the event for the European policy community centred around the theme Breaking the Chain: How EU action on obesity can reduce the burden of NCDs. Special thanks to our host, MEP Pr. Laurent Castillo! We are grateful to our speakers from IDF Europe, the European Society of Cardiology, WHO-European Region, The European Coalition for People Living With Obesity, and distinguished medical and scientific experts from the EASO community, who came together to discuss and affirm our mutual commitment to collaboration in addressing obesity. 75 colleagues joined the Parliamentary session from across stakeholder groups. Research shows that addressing obesity requires multi-stakeholder approaches. EASO is committed to fostering collaboration between clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and patients across disease areas. https://lnkd.in/ecMcK2Xd Volkan Demirhan Yumuk Susie Birney Paul Dendale Liesbeth Van Rossum Kremlin Wickramasinghe Jennifer Baker Euan Woodward Nicolas Chevalier Vicki Mooney Diane Watson-Nielsen

  • New research to be presented at this year’s European Congress on Obesity (#ECO2025, Malaga, Spain, 11-14 May) shows that having an overweight or obesity trajectory during childhood is associated with an increased risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adulthood. The study is from Frida Richter and European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) president-elect Dr Jennifer Baker of The Center for Clinical Research and Prevention, Copenhagen University Hospital - Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg, The Capital Region of Denmark, Copenhagen, Denmark, and colleagues. Attention towards risk factors for COPD other than smoking is increasingly being recognised in studies of environmental, occupational, and even early life factors. Although previous studies have suggested a link between adiposity and non-allergic asthma and lung function in adults, the association with COPD remains to be elucidated. The intention of this study was to examine whether trajectories of body mass index (BMI) in childhood were associated with COPD. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eeTtNwYf
