“More than just an office job” Evolve welcomed Jude for work experience recently in our continuing support to help young people into our industry. Jude was able to visit a residential refurbishment project, where we were inspecting the condition of the existing floor joists and take sizes of key structural steels, to enable us to carry out calculations and specify any repairs required. He saw first hand how Structural Engineering is far from your normal office job. Jude commented that “I had a great time learning about structural engineering and actually being able to go to a site was really cool and informational”   We hope we have ignited the spark and Jude continues to pursue a career in the Construction industry.

We have enjoyed working on this fantastic scheme with Bankfoot APAM and the rest of the project team. Fingers crossed that the project secures a positive determination!

Continuing our links with Arkwright Scholarships! We recently welcomed Jamie, who was awarded the highly competitive Arkwright Scholarship, into our office for work experience as part of his ongoing Arkwright mentee relationship with our Associate Jessica. Jamie, who is studying A levels at school, has been interested in a career in engineering for a while due to the unique problem-solving skills it requires. The work experience has maintained the momentum for this as a future pathway. Evolve are proud to have worked alongside Chapman Architects on the restoration of the Grade II-listed Victorian waterworks Morelands and Riverdale into a Biotech Hub, recently featured in the Architects Journal. The renovation of the historic buildings, including the additions of new suspended floors to incorporate new laboratories, offices and meeting rooms, was a complex engineering challenge to undertake whilst being sensitive to the beautiful historical architecture exposed. 

Sowing Engineering Career seeds with Work Experience. Last week Evolve hosted Elizabeth from The Saint John Henry Newman School in Stevenage for a week of work experience. She had a busy week learning how to use design packages such as Tekla and Revit, how to draw isometrically by hand and all about the different structural materials available. She visited site and saw some trial pits being dug and attended meetings with our engineers.  After an intense week, Elizabeth reflected how this had opened the world of Structural Engineering to her as a future career. We were very impressed with Elizabeth’s aptitude at understanding the complex Tekla TSD modelling software. Let’s hope this week sows the structural engineering seed and maybe she will be back to join EVOLVE as a consulting Structural Engineer someday. EVOLVE for the people EVOLVE, always

Inspiring young people into engineering! Our graduate Ben participated in St Aloysius college’s Post 18 Careers Networking event recently, as part of our links with Islington Council following our ongoing work at Finsbury Leisure Centre. Evolve are committed to promoting careers in the built environment and ensuring students have access to information on the various routes into this rewarding career. Ben was joined by other professionals at the evening and spoke to several students about his route into Engineering. Ben commented “It was a pleasure to attend the career pathways event at St Aloysius school sixth form. The students engaged well and showed interest in a wide range of careers. It was great to give the students a better insight into the multiple pathways available, and a perspective from multiple industries represented by all the professionals who attended. Hopefully, we will see some of them as Structural Engineers in the future!” EVOLVE for the people EVOLVE, always

Evolve are proud to have worked on the new pavilion “Radial” at Principal Place, Shoreditch for our client Brookfield Properties alongside Foster + Partners and Pro Access Scaffolding.  This pavilion was constructed using readily available and reusable materials in a public square as an attraction for the surrounding offices and general public. This 10m diameter by 6m tall structure is situated in the plaza which is directly above a lively Liverpool Street Station, therefore the engineering challenge was to keep the weight low, whilst ensuring overall stability. Consideration also had to be given into the installation to ensure that heavy lifting machinery would not be required. The result is a beautiful addition to the space in time for summer!
