It’s great to see why spare adrenaline pens are so vital highlighted in the press today. Anaphylaxis happens very quickly, and as this case in the news demonstrates, can happen unexpectedly. Having the pens to hand and the training to recognise and respond to an allergic reaction is life saving. We want spare pens to be in all schools in the country (it’s a key element of the Schools Allergy Code) and rolled out further too. Yesterday The Allergy Team held a Q&A for schools on this very topic with the allergy consultant Dr Paul Turner, who championed the “Spare Pens in School” initiative and was a main driver behind the law change. In the session we covered: - Why spare adrenaline pens are important to have in school - How many a school should have - What dose a school should hold, and does this differ if you’re a primary or a secondary school - When you can use them, and on whom - What kind of training staff need to use them - What happens if a pupil refuses an adrenaline pen when they need it And so much more… We are producing a free factsheet that covers a lot of this, and tells you how to buy them. This #WorldMentalHealthDay focuses on mental health in the workplace - in particular, on tackling chronic stress and burnout. Our school community is full of hard-working teachers and staff who give their all to provide young people with incredible learning experiences within and beyond the classroom on trips and visits. The significant workload and responsibility of teaching can add to mental load, leading to stress and risk of poor mental health. A survey by Education Support, a charity set up to improve the mental health and wellbeing of teachers, found that 78% of school staff were stressed and 36% reported experiencing burnout. I chatted with Wayne Holder, EVC at Alderman Richard Hallam Primary in Leicester recently about his experience of our Immersive EVC Training in France. We're running this again in March next year, with PGL Beyond and I asked Wayne to help explain what it's all about and if he'd recommend it to other EVCs. (Thankfully) he said, emphatically YES! Wayne was on the course in 2023, and even though he'd only recently completed his EVC revalidation, he said that he found it really valuable to attend the immersive training. For him, the most valuable part was taking the theory of risk management and putting it into practice during small group scenario tasks and 'real life' emergency situations.
