One week to go until our Sustainable Futures Symposium, so meet the speakers! Session One will be led by Dr Eva Marquis on sustainable mining. This will look at the importance of sustainable mining to the net-zero transition, and the growing need for critical minerals in order to move away from fossil fuels. Dr Eva Marquis is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the UKRI Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centre for Technology Metals (Met4Tech), focussing on developing circular economy geomodels for technology metals. Her work utilises mineralogy, geochemistry and geomodelling to gain insight into where technology metals are concentrated in ore deposits and mine wastes, and consider how circular economy principles can be integrated into geomodels and deposit evaluation. Exeter Marine Matthew Witt and Lucy Hawkes joined NatureScot and Edinburgh Napier University to investigate an annual gathering of tope in the Inner Hebrides! Despite bad weather they managed to tag 10 sharks. The movements of these tope will be recorded on an array of receivers. The equipment array on the seabed that will listen for the tags fitted to the tope has also been listening for tagged basking sharks. The listening array comprises of 8 receivers initially deployed for basking sharks (which we have been tagging) and that array has been complemented by another 2 receivers that are slightly better positioned to detect the tope. The listening array will also detect other tagged animals that go near it - including those tags which have not been deployed by Exeter. Today is World Whale Shark Day! Did you know that whale sharks are sharks and not whales? They are the biggest shark - and fish - in the world alive today! Professor Brendan Godley took these clips off Ningaloo Reef! “I don't have a bucket list but this would be on it. We were lucky enough to participate in a "swim with" whale sharks trip off Ningaloo Reef from Exmouth, WA. It was a wonderful experience, one that is shared by ca. 36,000 people per year. It's an industry with numerous operators and at least half a dozen boats of 20 people in teams of ten, guided by spotter aircraft but under strict regulation. No duck diving, no going beyond pectoral fin, 3m distant and limited duration swims. Still amazing, although a bit hectic at times. We managed 5 successful runs each. There are a LOT of sharks out there. We were never competing with other boats. Staff from Whale Shark Dive were lovely, highly committed to keeping punters in order, yet ensuring they had a great day. We booked with them on recommendation of Aussie mates. If I was to be a bit critical, while there was a lot of interpretation about the sharks, it was a bit light on the broader ecology and conservation of the reef and how participants could effect change and, for the first time in my time in Australia, no acknowledgment was given to the traditional owners. It feels that Exmouth has potential to send home more change makers than it does. The underwater visibility wasn’t great but, as you can see from my unfiltered novice go pro footage, views were amazing!” #WhaleShark #WhaleSharks #WhaleSharkDay #MarineMegafauna

Sarah Morcom studied MSc Marine Vertebrate Ecology and Conservation with us and graduated in 2021. She is now a Fisheries Observer for The Centre for Fisheries, Environment and Aquaculture Science (Cefas). “I enjoyed the strong practical elements of the course. I felt even with Covid I got a lot of chances to expand my field skills. The highlight for me was definitely the weeks of boat trips; we got to improve our ID skills at sea and a visit to Lundy island to see the seabirds. Having the opportunity to work with IoSIFCA and Natural England for my masters project was brilliant as well. The best thing about studying at the Penryn Campus of the University of Exeter is the staff. The lecturers all go above and beyond to support you. They really are exceptional. “I chose to work in fisheries because I like a challenge. I don’t believe there is ever a straightforward or obvious answer when it comes to fisheries research and management and I love getting stuck in to figuring out solutions that work for multiple different stakeholders.” #MarineConservation #Fisheries #FisheriesManagement

Take part in the National Health Snapshot Study! Researchers at the University of Exeter need your help to better understand the health effects of recreational visits to freshwater locations in the UK. We hope that the findings from this study will provide much needed information on the health risks of water pollution. They are looking for volunteers who recently visited rivers, lakes, or quarries, as well as volunteers who did not participate in water-based recreation (comparison group) to complete a short online questionnaire (10-20 minutes) about their health. Volunteers must be: - Permanent residents of the UK - Aged 16 or over Should you decide to take part, you will be asked to complete an online survey (about 10 minutes), which will inquire about your health, diet and behaviour. If you responded to this survey before, we would like you to invite you to complete the questionnaire again. To take part, visit: https://lnkd.in/eDHa2Mag #WaterPollution #EnvironmentalHealth #WildSwimming #RiverPollution
