📣 Last Friday Mark Sykes, our Head of Science for Fapas, presented at the International Food Control Conference in Hanoi. In today’s highly regulated food industry, ensuring safety and quality is paramount. Proficiency testing plays a vital role in helping laboratories meet international standards like ISO 17025 and achieve consistent quality control. Mark explored how proficiency testing not only helps laboratories maintain accreditation but also addresses larger implications for food manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and consumers. Key points in the presentation included: 👨🔬 How proficiency testing supports accurate and reliable food labelling to avoid consumer harm, including the critical detection of allergens. 🌍 The financial and reputational risks that food manufacturers face when products do not meet safety or quality standards, such as product recalls and international trade restrictions. 🔬 The importance of blind testing in real-world scenarios to assess and validate a laboratory’s ability to detect contaminants and adulterants. 📈 A detailed look at real proficiency test data, demonstrating how risk mitigation is essential for maintaining the highest standards in food control and laboratory assurance. Are you interested in the field of on-site diagnostics for food borne pathogens? Are you a method developer in official laboratories working towards development of on-site diagnostics? Or are you involved in the control of foodborne pathogens, such as regulators, policy bodies, and accreditation organizations? Then this survey is for you: At Fera, our team is working on the PATH-SAFE programme, WS3a, a cross-government surveillance research programme led by the FSA. Within this project, we aim to produce guidelines/recommendations for the development and deployment of on-site diagnostic tests for food-borne pathogens. To ensure these recommendations meet real world needs of developers and regulators, we are conducting an end-user study and plan to first conduct a short survey, potentially followed by a targeted interview.
