The UK’s oilseed rape (OSR) sector is rallying for a comeback. The new OSR Reboot initiative, spearheaded by United Oilseeds, recently gathered 57 experts from farming, retail, research, and more to address the declining UK rapeseed production. Key challenges include pest pressures and the post-neonicotinoid ban, which have lowered yields and boosted import reliance. Focused on three pillars—innovative breeding, agronomy, and policy reform—the initiative aims to revitalize the sector by creating resilient crops, adjusting farming practices, and pushing for supportive policies. With collaborations from ADAS and the John Innes Centre, there’s hope the UK can boost self-sufficiency in rapeseed, securing food and feed supply for the future. #AgricultureInnovation #SustainableFarming #Rapeseed #UKAgriculture https://lnkd.in/dtCuYVBA

Soy supply chains are at risk with few EUDR-compliant soy offers available for Q1 2025, says FEFAC. Procurement costs could rise 5-10%, adding up to €2.25bn. FEFAC calls for urgent guidance and legal clarity from the EU to prevent a supply crisis. Despite reassurances from the Commission, FEFAC secretary general, Alexander Döring, talking to FeedNavigator, pointed out that there has been no updated guidance for operators on EUDR compliance since December 2023. The next EU multi-stakeholder meeting on September 24 is expected to address some of these unresolved issues, with hopes that an additional EUDR implementation package will be published before the event. There have been multiple calls from EU trading partners and various industry stakeholders for a postponement of the January 2025 enforcement date for the regulation, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz only last Thursday adding his voice to such calls. When asked whether a delay would be likely, Döring told us why that is a tricky question to answer. #SoySupplyChain #EUDR #FeedIndustryCrisis #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/gXh8X5in

Boosting Africa's food security with seaweed and mushroom waste. Dr Godfrey Mhlongo a recent PhD graduate in animal science from South Africa’s North-West University (NWU), proposes using brown seaweed and spent oyster mushroom substrates in domestic chicken feed. This strategy could lower costs, reduce reliance on traditional feedstocks, and promote sustainability, he argues. Plus, it enhances poultry health and growth, offering economic benefits for small-scale farmers. With the right support, this approach could transform Africa's poultry industry, he claims. #FoodSecurity #Sustainability #Innovation #Africa https://lnkd.in/dy4RqU-R
