Finisterre designs functional product for those that share a love of the sea.

About us

For those who share our love of the sea. Proudly #BCorp It started in 2003 in a flat above a surf shop with an innovative fleece that was designed to keep out chill winds and warm up cold bodies. Since these early days, driven by those who have jumped on board, supported by our customers and suppliers, the brand and product has widened beyond these original beginnings. Yet from our cliff top workshop in St. Agnes, we stay true to our original design ethos of functionality and sustainability brought to life in an understated style and identity, always remaining committed to product, environment and people. The name of one of the most rugged headlands that bravely bears the full brunt of the North Atlantic gales, and a former shipping forecast area, Finisterre literally means end of the earth or land’s end. The place where land ends has intrigued man for centuries, fostering both a real and a romantic relationship with the sea; a relationship that runs deep in our narrative. Since day one we have taken a pioneering approach to making better and more sustainable product, challenging and innovating, seeking alternatives to what has gone before. We’re committed to making informed decisions about our impact on the environment and are constantly trying to push boundaries to make the best product we can. In our eyes this is gear that will be with you the longest; and the longer you have it, the more attached to it you become. Content Warning: this post mentions suicide. As a community of surfers, swimmers, runners, cyclists and more, we know how valuable time in nature can be for both your physical and mental health. This World Mental Health Day we sat down to talk to Katy Roberts who this year completed a mammoth cycle ride around the coast of mainland Britain, in memory of her Dad. She raised money for charity and used the challenge to have beautiful, open and frank conversations about mental health and suicide. Swimming in the ocean along the way, Katie's cycle bought together communities and was a stark reminder of the power of movement and nature-connection for our mental health. Katie's story is now yours to read on our latest Broadcast ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eFTKWkTV

Finisterre x RNLI is here. Meet The Polperro Knit: A Story Woven Over 200 years. Inspired by traditional 19th century wool 'Gansey' jumpers, knitted in unique local patterns to identify Cornish fishermen as they bravely went to sea.  Traditionally, they were handed down from mother to daughter and the designs and patterns were specific to the Cornish fishing village where the jumper was made. Among the patterns were nine individual designs from the small village of Polperro on Cornwall’s south coast. It is from one of these 200-year-old patterns – one recorded as the Polperro Musician stitch – that we have taken the inspiration for our modern interpretation. These were a true working fisherman’s garment – comfortable, warm and durable, with special arm gussets for free movement when hauling in the day’s catch, and a weave so tight it was practically waterproof. As a homage to those intrepid early seafarers, our own Polperro Jumper has been made in collaboration with the RNLI. 10% of the sales from the collection will go towards helping continue their vital work of saving lives at sea. This year we launch our third collaboration with the RNLI. Being a volunteer crew of the St. Agnes lifeboat crew for over 20 years is something I’m very proud of. As the RNLI celebrates its 200year anniversary, it feels the spirit of this unique charity is the same now as it was 200 years ago; volunteers setting out to sea answering the call of those in need...256 stations around the country with crew on call 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. So it’s big thing - for me personally - and Finisterre to support the RNLI. This year’s collaboration is more is more deeply steeped in local history than ever. Ganseys (the jumpers sometimes referred to as Guernseys) can be traced to many areas around the UK coastline but in Cornwall the style took on a cultural and familial significance. They were handed down from mother to daughter and the designs and patterns were specific to the Cornish fishing village where the jumper was made. Among the patterns were nine individual designs from the small village of Polperro on Cornwall’s south coast. It is from one of these 200-year-old patterns – one recorded as the Polperro Musician stitch – that we have taken the inspiration for our modern interpretation. The ocean’s future is our future. We first met the Finisterre team in 2014 through friends at Surfers Against Sewage, bonding over a love for cold ocean currents and biting winds known to all who frequent the Northern Atlantic waters. At the time, we had completed the first production run of our cruiser skateboards in Chile from a few tons of recycled fishing nets. Fast forward 10 years through a journey of material innovation and thousands of tons of recycled nets — to the relaunch of Finisterre’s Nimbus jacket built from NetPlus® material. Designed for cold water surfers and adventurers beyond the sea, we are grateful to work with the Finisterre team to expand their positive impacts on the ocean and commitment to responsible materials. There's no such thing as 'perfection' when it comes to sustainable or responsible apparel (even if it's often the customer's expectation), but there is the constant pursuit of improvement. Today, after years of development, we are celebrating the release of our next generation of the Finisterre Nimbus Jacket - now made with Netplus, an incredible fabric developed by the team at Bureo Inc, made entirely from 100% traceable discarded fishing nets. The fill is REPREVE, an ultra-light insulation made with ocean-bound plastic bottles, and the whole thing is finished with a Flouro-carbon free water-repellent finish. The result is an unbelievably soft, lightweight, warm jacket that will serve you for years to come. It's as close to perfection as we can get for now...(not that we will stop trying).
