#DYK that #OnThisDay in 1920 Baruj Benacerraf was Venezuelan-American geneticist and immunologist who studied the mechanisms and genetic basis of the immunologic response and especially of its role in certain diseases known as the autoimmune diseases. He received a share (with George Snell and Jean Dausset) of the 1980 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Benacerraf showed that genetic factors intimately related to the genes that determine an individual's unique constitution of H antigens actually regulate the interaction among the various cells belonging to the immunological system and are thereby important to the strength of an immunological reaction. https://lnkd.in/ej_mdGkr #Genetics #Immunology #NobelPrize #AutoimmuneDiseases #MedicalHistory #BarujBenacerraf #ScienceFacts #HealthResearch #VenezuelanScience

The Excel spreadsheet - every scientist's go-to tool for data handling and arranging. That's just a fact, it's the simplest tool to use, available on every PC, everyone has used it. But should it be? Is it really the best tool? It's Excel's 40th birthday and this article sums up some of the more disruptive events caused by misplaced commas etc., in Excel formulas: https://lnkd.in/eX6wY3XQ In #LifeSciences, there's a huge push from many people who embraced programmatic approaches to data handling in R on Python. Both have phenomenal packages just for that, written to deal with the exact problems Excel, well, is less than excellent at dealing with! But the learning curve to use these tools is very steep, and there's a good chance you'll be the only person ever to use the pipelines you wrote. Why not to dress your solutions in an accessible tool, which can be used by others, benefit your team, your colleagues and the broader scientific field? Firefinch Software specialises in building applications for handling of pipelines, complex data and crating beautiful UIs for bespoke needs of the Life Sciences market. Let's chat about it! #DataHandling #BespokeSoftware #Programming #NoMoreExcel

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to reduce the number of broken bones missed when doctors analyse X-rays, according to the NICE - National Institute for Health and Care Excellence The health assessment body says research suggests the technology is safe and could speed up diagnosis, relieving pressure on clinicians and reducing the need for some follow-up appointments. Four AI tools are set to be recommended for use in urgent care in England while more evidence is collected on the benefits of the technology. AI will not be working alone - each image will be reviewed by a healthcare professional. NICE says broken bones are missed in 3-10% of cases - it is the most common diagnostic error in emergency departments. And the trained experts who perform and analyse thousands of X-ray images every day in the NHS are in short supply, with a huge workload. The Role of Automation in Industrialising Cell Therapy Manufacturing Cell therapy refers to the transfer of cellular materials, either from an autologous or allogenic source, into a patient for therapeutic purposes. Key advances in understanding and genetic engineering of stem- and non-stem cells have led to a series of cell therapy approvals, providing life-saving treatments. As cell therapies move from niche treatments to widely approved solutions for diseases like cancer and sickle cell, there is a growing need to manufacture these therapies for tens or hundreds of thousands of patients. However, modifications of current methods are needed due to inefficiencies, and the need for vast space, labour and capital in producing cell therapies. New Technique Uses Light to Detect Prostate Cancer An Aston University researcher has used light to develop the first step towards a quicker, cheaper and less painful technique to detect cancer. Professor Igor Meglinski from the University’s Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies led the team that has developed a new method of analysing the crystals in dehydrated blood. Using a new polarisation-based image reconstruction technique to analyse polycrystalline structures in dried blood samples. The proteins in blood change their shape and how they fit together during the early stages of diseases like cancer.
