If I could share one piece of advice with care companies, what would it be? - Ask candidates to being their I.D, right to work docs, and new starter information to the interview. Why? Because if you don't hire them, you haven't lost any time or money, other than interview time. If you do hire them, you can get everything started there and then. You can eliminate days (or weeks) out of your hiring process, just by collecting these documents whilst the candidate is in front of you. I'm still surprised, by how many companies don't do this, and yet are surprised that candidates take days or weeks to provide a passport or proof of address. If the candidate doesn't bring the documents to interview, it shows you they haven't listened, aren't prepared, or aren't bothered about what you ask of them. Speaks volumes, eh?

Focusing, and specialising in a 3-point focus gives us great clarity. Clarity on what works. Clarity on what doesn't work. Dealing with people is never going to have a one-size fits all system. There are just too many variables to deal with, to have it even close to being efficient. Bespoke systems don't have to cost a fortune, they can even be written on a post-it note and stuck to a PC monitor (wouldn't recommend this...but it would work!). A system will work, if it's processes are followed. Using technology to strip out some of the human focused process management can have an immense compound effect on your time, and therefore positively influence your business too. More time = more opportunities.

Find the sweet spot, and tickle it! Understanding the needs/demands in your team, and understanding those skills lie in existing or new team members; is a big thing to balance in a teams growth. When thinking about your team retention, have you thought about whether your usual reaction to having a need; is to employ someone new with the skills; or have you spoke to your current team and offered a training and development plan to fill your need? Investing in your current team, is one of the most effective ways of retaining top performers. Yes, not all people want progression and to be up-skilled; but finding those that do, often reaps more rewards and is more cost effective than spending money & time on hiring someone new.

🗞️ NEWSFLASH! You don't need to rebuild your processes! Sometimes the right processes already exist in your systems. All they need is a little tweak, or a slight change to something to make it more streamlined and efficient. Mentoring your team through their own processes, often allows them to see the bottlenecks for themselves. Therefore, as they know the system best; they make the changes needed that best suit their working practices and everything becomes simpler! How often do you mentor and review processes alongside your team?

Nothing quite drains your stomach and makes you 'sigh', like when you see a message come through on a group chat, or receive a call to say someone isn't doing their shift, meaning "you know who(!)" is covering it! It gets worse when you look at the month ahead, knowing you can't make any weekend plans or book annual leave.... is that fair?! Knowing that you can rely on your team, and that the Service is safe when you're not in the building.... feels like winning a gold medal! Companies and managers often overlook recruitment, and retention specifically, when their teams are full; and everyone is pulling their weight. BUT!!! This is the time that you go deeper on retention, and ensure your recruitment processes flow smoothly; to avoid being in a position of desperation ever again! Don't sit back and relax! 📢 Managers working in Care...! 🔎 How's your weekend looking?
