Non-profit Organization Management
Transforming lives through economic empowerment, education and savings groups through central and eastern Africa.
About us
Five Talents works with local partners to transform lives, empower women and encourage sustainability by starting community-led Savings Groups where members can learn, earn, save & invest together. In Groups, members receive literacy, numeracy and business skills training, equipping them to set up businesses with their own resources. Microfinance initiatives support small businesses. Through training, saving, and access to loans, our partners support members as they establish and nurture their small businesses. Each business builds economic independence for the individual entrepreneur, their families and the families of those they employ. Programmes differ depending on the need in the area, for example, in Tsavo we offer Savings Groups and education as well as support in understanding conservation and how local communities can protect their business, reducing human wildlife conflicts and therefore aiding conservation within the National Park. Five Talents partner programmes operate in Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Burundi and Bolivia.

Kris Coppock and Charlie Harvey have just landed in Dar es Salaam, to start a trip to programmes in Morogoro and Mikumi. They will be meeting with local programme coordinators and visiting businesses, started and run by members of rural Savings Groups. Visiting Groups and businesses show us the impact that business skills training and access to a safe place to save can have on transforming a community. #internationaldevelopment #tanzania #entrepreneurship

From the Archives: How Climate Change Affects Women. "In many lower income countries, agriculture is the largest employment sector for women, but in many of these areas, women are not allowed to own the land due to traditional cultural beliefs. When a climate shock disrupts or destroys an agricultural business women are left without an income, without savings or assets to fall back on, and have to find a livelihood elsewhere." Rachel Lindley experienced first hand the rough roads and long distances between dispersed communities this week, as she visited programmes in Aru, Democratic Republic of Congo. Thanks to CommCare (powered by Dimagi) - a mobile data collection platform that helps organisations monitor and manage programmes remotely—the team in Aru can now submit data in real-time without making the long journey back to the Diocesan office. Even better, CommCare allows them to more easily track savings and literacy groups over time, giving a clearer view of the changes happening on the ground. During the workshop, the team not only trained on CommCare but also revisited their theory of change—a roadmap that links their activities to the impact they want to see. Through participatory discussions, they explored how their work leads to meaningful outcomes, drawing on the diverse insights of the team in Aru. We are very grateful to A&O Shearman for their support in funding Five Talents UK to enable the development and delivery of this project. #aru #democraticreplublicofcongo #commcare #internationaldevelopment Dimagi

Last night, Five Talents Grace Cooney attended a networking event with B1G1, chaired by CEO Masami Sato, for people who want to support causes which deliver social and economic transformation. Grace said, "I was inspired by Masami's story of how giving small amounts can create an immense impact in other parts of the world, which is harmonious with our thoughts on harnessing the power of what we have. It was great to meet and connect with those leading businesses and charities, discussing and emphasizing the importance of community, and how we can work in partnership to deliver global impact. This resonates with how Five Talents Groups value community-led partnership, trust, and idea sharing. In the words of Masami, "sustainability cannot be achieved without uplifting everyone." A huge thankyou to B1G1 for the continued partnership, and for sharing the work we do as worthy causes for companies to connect with, and to Paul Dunn and Masami Sato for the invitation.

This week, co-CEO Rachel Lindley is in the Democratic Republic of Congo, visiting Savings Groups and the programme team there. Her aim is to better understand first hand the difficulties faced in such rural parts of the world, and to support training on a data collection system (CommCare) which will help monitor and report on these programmes remotely. While Rachel’s visiting, the programme team are also spending time revisiting the theory of change. Through participatory discussions, they explored how their work leads to meaningful outcomes, drawing on the diverse insights of the team in Aru. #theoryofchange #DRC #internationaldevelopment

Next week, Five Talents Kris Coppock and Charlie Harvey fly to Dar Es Salaam and on to Morogoro and Mikumi in Tanzania, to visit Savings Groups and programme partners. They will learn first hand about the businesses created from individuals in Savings Groups and see the impact your donations have on supporting families to diversify their incomes and provide education for their children. With this in mind, we reshare May M.'s reflections on her 2018 trip to Morogoro, and how expectations of countries in Central and Eastern Africa are often far from reality. We'd love to know, when you think of Tanzania, what comes into your mind, let us know below! #internationaldevelopment #charitiesinAfrica #sustainabledevelopment
