Phoebe recently joined our Electrical Repairs Department as a trainee and is already becoming well versed in the different aspects of her role. On one of our recent walks around the business our timing was just right to catch Justin taking Phoebe through some training on one of our ABI Electronics - Manufacturers of test, repair and reverse engineering systems Testing stations. We know we really hammer this home, maybe you're sick of hearing it, but we’ll say it again. Testing is one of, if not the most important factor in repairing. We test to identify problems, we test to ensure we’ve fixed them, we re-test to make sure they stay fixed. Learning on the job and earning a fair wage for it, is something we champion. Why those Nylons look superb! Our customer needed a worn plastic component replacing with a fresh nylon replacement, and fast! FAB! We scrambled Thunderbird 2 (because it does everything) and off we set to the rescue. Now we’ve several bits of kit that can create this piece and it was over to the machine shop to make the call, they’re the “Brains” on this one! Clausing CNC Knee Miller Robodrill 3D Print On this occasion the Clausing Miller was the machine of choice and on receipt of 220mm Nylon we’ve wasted no time in producing these components and returning them to customer. This first job is a longer process as, we’ve had to draw up the program specific to generating these parts, but now that’s done we can provide them on an even quicker turnaround. Take a step inside our Electrical Drives & Repairs workshop! This isn’t a deep dive, so you won’t need your snorkel & mask it’s more touching the surface of our electrical repairs & maintenance department. As with the rest of the business this is a 24/7, 365 day a year centre. Our uniformed central layout means any individual can sit in one of the 18 bays to assess, diagnose and carryout maintenance and repairs on jobs as they enter the workflow. Supporting our testing we’ve several mobile rigs for specific manufacturers, including Fanuc, Siemens, Sinamics, B & R Acopos and more. You’ll find high load rigs as well giving us run testing capabilities for a wide range of electrical equipment parts. Improving our ability to visually inspect components we’ve a digital microscope station, adjacent to our dual ABI testing stations. We continue to invest in our people and our equipment to help us keep ahead on our ability to serve our customers. It’s a little bit of poetry in motion as Marcus operates our Samatic 2780 automatic winding machine. Set to create 160mm copper coils, it’s drawing off copper wire from a spool to create equally wound coils for a Linear Motor. The benefit of an automated winder like this one, is uniformity of coils and that precious resource time! We gain well wound coils in less time than it would take to do it manually. Helping to reduce the labour required to repair the motor and get it returned to our customer and back into operation. Our Meerkat web-based Condition Monitoring System is installed in the Scalpel and is an integral part of their facilities management. Helping manage the day to day operation of the building and provide relevant, up to date information on the health of the buildings mechanical assets. In turn enabling maintenance teams to plan and action maintenance accordingly. Taking an early trip into the workshops this morning and we first spotted Jon working on a traction motor by BAE Systems but there’s quite a bit more happening. A palette load of fixed Servo Motors being navigated through the workshop, heading to be secured for despatch. A 250kW motor is going through VPI (vacuum pressure impregnation) we’ve mentioned before this is a really important part of the motor rewinding & repair process, helping to improve power output, increase contamination resistance and reduce coil vibration. ❓ What’s Occurring? ❓ Our Drives department have received these PCBs which are controller board converters, but what are we doing with them? We’re going to be carrying out tests on these boards at the component level. We’ll then replace any devices identified as faulty. We’ll also carry out an overhaul which includes replacing components that are prone to age related degradation. Like everything as the components of PCB get older, they don’t work quite as they used to! Of course replacing aged components isn’t enough if you don’t bother checking the tracks as well. Which is why at Fletcher Moorland we carry out a visual inspection and solder any joints that require to be re-flowed. With this work completed we’ll ABI test the board, that’s what’s occurring! This WEG fan unit is in at Fletcher Moorland from an energy and utilities company. Work on this will be carried out by our Electro-Mechanical shop. Of course every job starts with an assessment and to do that we strip the fan unit down. Under inspection we found a few challenges, not least that due to the level of rust the thread inserts had rusted to nothing. We also found a couple of quite unique contaminants, including a drill bit! Haydn (pictured) is continuing the clean down, paying careful attention to areas that are close to the fans operation; removing as much debris as possible. This will allow for the future smooth running of the fan and work as prevention of any contaminant disrupting the fans movement or causing damage to it. It's only part of the process, there’s plenty more care for this industrial fan as it enjoys a mechanical spa day at Fletcher Moorland. It'll be given a make over with a fresh lick of paint.
