Redefining single-use plastic packaging with an innovative seaweed-derived material
About us
FlexSea is a sustainable-packaging company aiming to replace traditional petroleum plastic with an innovative natural material derived from seaweed. Our material is degradable in marine, soil and home-composting environments. We want to redefine the way people see plastic packaging. We want to innovate and change the way we see and use plastics. At FlexSea we believe the packaging of the future to be a packaging that is born in nature, serves its purpose, and returns to nature in a harmless way. A packaging that is built to exist, protect and preserve its contents only for the duration that these exist for. At FlexSea the future is now.

🎓 Congratulations are in order for our CSO Mattia Parati who has passed his PhD viva from the University of Wolverhampton! 🧪 His expertise in bacterial fermentation have been the cornerstone of our Biotechnology vertical since its conception and the awarding of his doctorate is a richly-deserved acknowledgement of his contribution to this field. ✍️ As a post-graduate student in Prof Iza Radecka's lab at the University of Wolverhampton, Mattia has been working towards his PhD in Microbiology with a focus on Bioprocess and Biopolymer Engineering. Together with colleagues at the University of Wolverhampton, Mattia has published a number of impactful papers in the last few years and FlexSea are proud to have maintained a close partnership with the University. 🙏 Thank you to everyone at The University of Wolverhampton for their continued support and a huge well done once again to Dr Mattia Parati! #FlexSea #climatetech #innovation #sustainability #biotechnology #bioplastics #product #processing #manufacturing #circular #seaweed #biomaterials #compostable

🥁 Drum roll please as the results are in from our Biobased Testing… 🎊 97.7% Biobased 🎊 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ That’s right, FlexSea’s bioplastic formulation scored an incredible 97.7% biobased carbon content comfortably securing the top accreditation of 4 out of 4 stars. This confirms that almost all the carbon present in our formulations is derived from organic biomass sources 📞 Want to find out more? Please get in touch with us via the comments, our LinkedIn DMs or via our website (www.flex-sea.com), to learn how our next generation bioplastics can deliver a cleaner, greener option for your business #FlexSea #biobased #climatetech #innovation #sustainability #bioplastics #product #processing #packaging #manufacturing #circular #technology #seaweed #biomaterials #compostable

🧑🔬 We are over the moon to announce a new grant with New Zealand-based NanoLayr, a truly round-the-world collaboration! Together we aim to be working to develop planet-friendly nanofibres, 500 times smaller than human hair! 🧶 These fibres, created by electrospinning, have a remarkable ability to capture tiny particles in the air and as such are highly effective air filters. 🎤 To borrow the words of the SWIFT project team: 🌱 “Combining FlexSea's eco-friendly materials with NanoLayr's technology, the SWIFT project aims to develop scalable, high-quality, and sustainable air filters, reducing landfill waste and reliance on synthetic or oil-based plastics." 💚 Another big win for the green innovation sphere! #FlexSea #NanoLayr #climatetech #innovation #sustainability #bioplastics #product #processing #packaging #manufacturing #circular #technology #seaweed #biomaterials #compostable

⭐️ Just as the UK schools are stopping for half-term we have also had our first report card of the academic year, and are proud to show that we have received four gold stars! 🌱 Our injection moulding pellets have successfully passed all four home compostability (EN13432) tests! Including investigations into their biodegradability, disintegration, ecotoxicity and full material analysis. 👓 You can see our pellets disappear in front of your eyes (image 1), followed by both barley (image 2) and sunflower (image 3) flourishing in compost containing our degraded pellets. 🍊 A huge result for the FlexSea extrusion team with our material passing the threshold for the first two tests in half the allocated time, and breaking down faster than orange or banana peels, all while still offering an 18-24 month shelf life! 📞 If you’d like to hear more about how our next generation bioplastics can deliver a cleaner, greener option for your business then please get in touch with us via the comments, our LinkedIn DMs or via our website (www.flex-sea.com). #FlexSea #EN13432 #climatetech #innovation #sustainability #bioplastics #product #processing #packaging #manufacturing #circular #technology #seaweed #biomaterials #compostable

🎙 Olivia was back on stage at Medilink Midlands earlier this month, with a sleek, new-look powerpoint alongside her. At her captivating best, Olivia gave a wonderful talk to a fascinated audience and loved fielding your questions both up on stage and in the main hall. 😊 Alongside presenting, it was brilliant to catch up with some familiar faces Benjamin Roberts, Simon Stewart-Smith, Stuart Taylor, Keith Binding, Kelly Myall-Chance and Sean James. It truly is wonderful to see the growth and innovation in the sustainable medical technology community, one we are proud to be a part of. 🙏 Our thanks must go to Becky Sharpe for organising the event, as well as to Sue Saville for such a warm welcome to the stage 📞 Want to see the presentation yourself? Or have one of the FlexSea team brighten up the stage of your event? Get in touch with us via the comments, our LinkedIn DMs or via our website (www.flex-sea.com). Impact Shakers are out here promoting the startups to keep an eye on in the ocean and bluetech spheres. Our sustainably sourced, home compostable biomaterials are #RedefiningBioplastics and we are delighted to be included in this short-list of companies tackling global food security, fight climate change, and ditch plastic packaging.
This week's 'Impact Startups to Watch' are leveraging #ocean farming for sustainable food & materials. Seaweed cultivation – particularly kelp, a nutrient-rich superfood high in protein, low in fat, and packed with vitamins and minerals – is emerging as a powerful solution for sustainable food production and climate change mitigation. Expanded seaweed farming can directly address global food insecurity. Plus, it offers a plastic-free bio-packaging alternative - seaweed bioplastic is biodegradable within six weeks, potentially reducing the nearly 8 million metric tons of plastic polluting our oceans annually. These startups are using seaweed to tackle global food security, fight climate change, and ditch plastic packaging: POSEIDONA develops sustainable proteins from algal waste and invasive biomass to create the tastiest, mouth-watering food products. FlexSea is redefining single-use plastic packaging with an innovative seaweed-derived material. Algapelago is developing a range of seaweed-based, animal feed supplements and plant fertilizers to address sustainable food systems for our growing population. Seatrients is a startup from Sweden that produces a nutritious power beverage using Sea Moss - a gelatinous type of seaweed found in the Caribbean islands, known for its nutritional and medicinal properties. Origin by Ocean is a Finnish startup that aims to detoxify the chemical industry by offering sustainable, algae-based alternatives to traditional oil-based solutions and lead the way to a future industrial-scale algae refinement plant. #ImpactEntrepreneurship #SustainableFood #OceanFarming
