Did you know that AI has actually been around since 1956? 😱 It feels like AI has sneaked up on us over the last year, but the first AI program was actually presented at a conference in 1956 by John McCarthy and Marvin Minksy [1]. Since then, data scientists have continued to develop AI capability but have been constantly limited by computing power. "The toolboxes in software such as Matlab use a Gaussian process which is a machine learning modelling technique, and they have been around since the turn of the century," says Gary Brotman, CEO at Secondmind. "The only difference is that now, AI is more operational and used at scale which is only possible due to more accessible and cheaper computing power." However, in 2020 there was a major turning point. 🔃 Google DeepMind released a model called AlphaFold which showcased new techniques around modelling accuracy in 3D space. This, alongside large language models such as ChatGPT which are now capable of running on GPUs are the main reasons AI has exploded into engineering.
