We are thrilled that the Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC) by REX Architecture and the Arding & Hobbs building by Stiff + Trevillion Architects have been shortlisted for the Society of Façade Engineering (SFE) Façade 2024 Design and Engineering Awards, in the 'New Build International' and 'Refurbishment UK' categories, respectively. FMDC Ltd were involved as expert stone consultants in the selection and assessment of the 7000 panels of book matched translucent veined Portuguese marble that make up the facades of the Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC) and as facade engineers for the new roof pavilion and glazed rooflights of the Arding & Hobbs building. Two exceptional buildings certainly deserving of an award. Photos of our recent trip to Josef Gartner GmbH’s factory in Germany to attend a performance mock-up (PMU) test and review a visual mock-up (VMU) for our One Liverpool Street project, a new office building designed by Eric Parry Architects and being delivered by Mace. The PMU was for a unitised curtain wall system at Level 8 incorporating cast aluminium panels. The successful PMU test was followed by an inspection of a VMU of a typical ground floor bay, comprising a steel stick curtain wall installed between rainscreen cladding with cast aluminium columns, beams and perforated spandrels, which provided a great opportunity to discuss important design aspects of this very intricate cladding type. An intense, yet very productive exercise, that will no doubt prove very useful for what should be yet another landmark building in the City of London by Eric Parry Architects. Architects’ Journal Exclusive: First Look at One Ashley Road 📰 Alison Brooks Architects' One Ashley Road, flagship project of the Tottenham Hale regeneration in London, UK, is a dense live-work-shop community complex rooted in place. One Ashley Road, a landmark project by Alison Brooks Architects for Related Argent, serves as the gateway to the Heart of Hale redevelopment in Tottenham Hale. This scheme is part of a large-scale transformation of a post-industrial, traffic-dominated hub into a diverse, walkable neighbourhood. It features two residential towers framing a courtyard block, housing 183 units above three levels of retail and incubator office spaces, along with roof gardens and a new public realm. The design pays homage to the area’s industrial heritage, particularly the adjacent Berol House, once part of the Eagle Pencil Company Factory. The 'carved' and animated perimeter block is expressed through a distinctive, faceted form and pronounced verticality. Featuring a rich orange brick outer skin and a shimmering metal inner skin, the design draws inspiration from the graphic colours and hexagonal forms of the iconic Berol Eagle Pencil. It defines the northern edge of a new transport interchange and acts as the 'front door' to the Heart of Hale masterplan. The scheme offers a new tree-filled civic square at the 'prow' of the site, as well as a characterful new pedestrian passage that leads into the Berol Factory Courtyard. FMDC Ltd’s André Ramalhinho recently visited SCHINDLER façade solutions' factory, to witness a performance test for the timber unitised curtain wall system, as well an impact test for the glass louvre system forming part of the cladding of Belgrove House, a life sciences building by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris architects for developer Precis Advisory Ltd. Both tests were successful, marking an important milestone for the project.
