Providing expertise and support in order to protect, improve and expand England's woodlands.
About us
What do we do? We provide grants, licences and advice to private woodland owners to encourage new tree planting and to help keep private forests under sustainable management. Our plant health officers inspect wood imports at ports to minimise the risk from foreign pests and diseases. Our experts work with local authorities and landowners to contain and control any spread. We licence tree felling to protect our woodlands for generations to come.

The 5th edition of the UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) came into full effect on 1 October 2024. This is a technical standard for managing forests across the UK and applies to all woodland, regardless of who owns or manages it. Our NEW blog explains what it means for you and highlights some of the key changes in the new edition. Note that grant scheme and regulatory applications received by the Forestry Commission from 1 October 2024 will be assessed against the 5th edition of UKFS. Grant applications and regulatory approvals received before 1 October 2024 will be assessed using the 4th edition of the UKFS. Existing approvals under the 4th edition remain valid. We're introducing new measures to limit the impact of the tree pest Ips typographus and help protect the UK timber industry. Planting spruce trees in parts of East Anglia & South East England will be restricted under the new measures. These new restrictions come after further findings this year, including the first UK finding of Ips typographus on Sitka spruce in July, and will be in effect from 29 October. They are part of the continued action being taken to limit the spread of this tree pest. Andrea Deol, our Head of Plant Health Forestry, says: “Ips typographus can have a serious impact on spruce trees, and so restricting spruce planting in some areas of East and South East England ahead of the tree-planting season will help with our ongoing eradication efforts. “All landowners, managers and timber processors are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the pest via our Tree Alert Portal.” Read our full guidance: https://lnkd.in/dCium_TT #TreeHealth
