🌾💧🤝 FoodTech 500 alum enters partnership to improve precision irrigation. Orbia Netafim, a leader in precision irrigation, has partnered with Agtech innovator Phytech to enhance digital farming. This partnership aims to combine both companies’ strengths, helping farmers improve crop yields and reduce water waste. Phytech’s technology will be integrated with Netafim’s GrowSphere system to offer advanced control and real-time monitoring. Farmers will benefit from better detection of issues like water or fertilizer waste, preventing costly system malfunctions. 🌎🍫🤝 FoodTech 500 alum secures funding from food giant to accelerate production of its cocoa-free chocolate. German food manufacturer DöhlerGroup has invested in UK startup NuKoKo, which is developing cocoa-free chocolate made from fava beans. Nukoko plans to launch its bean-to-bar chocolate in 2025, with Döhler helping to scale up production. Climate change is reducing cocoa supply and raising prices, making alternatives like fava beans more attractive. Nukoko's chocolate is produced through fermentation and it yields 90% fewer emissions and contains 40% less sugar than traditional chocolate. Nukoko’s innovation has gained attention, earning a spot in the IndieBio accelerator and our very own FoodTech 500 list. 🇬🇧🧫🐟 FoodTech 500 alum pursues UK regulatory approval for its cultivated fish products. Umami Bioworks, a Singapore-based cell-grown seafood producer, has expanded into the UK to enter the European market. CEO Mihir Pershad highlighted the UK’s focus on food security and biotech expertise as key reasons for the move. The company will collaborate with institutions like UCL to commercialize its cultivated seafood products. Cultivated seafood is not yet allowed in the UK without regulatory approval. Securing this approval is a key part of Umami’s plan to bring its products to market. The company is developing a modular platform using stem cell biology and automation to produce cultivated versions of endangered and desired species, with red snapper expected to be one of the first introduced. ADM has launched a supportive solutions platform for consumers using GLP-1 and anti-obesity medications (AOMs), addressing the growing need for tailored nutrition solutions. It features over 25 concepts based on consumer insights and scientific research. A survey by ADM found that 83% of AOM users in the US prefer food products marketed to support their treatment, focusing more on nutrition, taste, and portion size. Many have also increased their intake of plant-based proteins, fiber, and probiotics. The platform provides functional ingredients that meet five key needs, such as muscle mass maintenance and gastrointestinal comfort. It includes plant-based ingredients, prebiotics, and probiotics to enhance flavor. UOBO, a Barcelona-based food tech startup, has raised €500,000 in seed funding to advance its mission of providing egg alternatives for food manufacturers. 🇰🇷🧫🐟 FoodTech 500 alum enters partnership to scale production of cultivated fish in South Korea. Umami Bioworks, a Singapore-based FoodTech company, partners with KCell Biosciences and WSG CREST to create a scalable production pipeline for cultivated fish in South Korea. The partnership follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed on September 5 and seeks to combine each partner’s expertise to commercialize cultivated fish in the region. South Korea is one of the world’s largest seafood markets per capita. Recently, the country advanced regulatory approvals for cultivated meat, highlighting a promising market for cultivated fish. KCell Biosciences will supply advanced cell culture media, while WSG will provide the bioreactor hardware. UMAMI Bioworks CEO Mihir Pershad emphasized the need for strategic partnerships to establish a scalable production solution. This initiative could lead to the first cultivated food production facility in South Korea.
