Founders have a reputation as risk takers. But so many (Chris Mole included) are actually pretty risk adverse. Chris knew he needed a strategy to allow him to feel comfortable taking risks as his business grew. In this weeks blog he talks about the bet budget and how it helped him get from £50k/m, to £100k/m, to £500k/m and beyond. // Be sure to subscribe above to get weekly blogs on how it feels to start, scale and sell a business.

This was the exact moment that I signed the contract to sell my business. I'd booked a holiday in Greece to celebrate, but the deal was delayed by a few days. So I ended up doing the 45 signatures from the bar of my hotel. Thanks to Docusign, I'd say it took me about 2 minutes. My wife didn't have it quite so easy. She had to witness each of the 45 signatures, writing out her full name, occupation and address. Without copy and paste functionality! I documented the full day that I sold my business in this blog - https://lnkd.in/eU-m32Hn Not just what happened. But how it felt. I desperately wanted to know how it was going to feel for pretty much the entire time I was running my business. I hope it's helpful for anyone on their own journey. // .....if you did read the blog and it was helpful, maybe I could ask for something back in return. During August, I'm using my Linkedin posts to try and raise £1,500 to fund a wish for a seriously ill child with the brilliant team at the Rays of Sunshine Children's Charity. Even if it's just £1, your donation would be incredible. Check it out at https://lnkd.in/eRHsYaYx. P.S If you think the blog was worth more than £1 then feel free to donate more. The charity (and my ego) will be very happy. #startups #founder #entrepreneur #agency

I hated hiring external agencies and consultants. I wanted to do everything in-house. Even though I was running an agency myself, that was convincing other businesses to outsource. But I eventually caved and hired all sorts of external support. Some of it helped us deliver a successful acquisition. Some of it was money down the drain. This weeks blog gives my experience of which was which. Read it here - https://lnkd.in/eUyCmNYV // Running a business is tough. Financial freedom. I spent my life striving for it. But I'm not convinced it exists. Is it a myth, or have I just not done it right? Check out my new blog and let me know. There aren't many things that will impact your finances, morale and progress more than a client resignation. Even the clients you don't really want to keep, sting when you lose them. But the most painful are surely the ones you don't see coming. The clients that are safe as houses. And then the email entitled "Contract". Someone, please invent a business model that doesn't need customers. But until that day, my latest blog about the clients I lost and the emotional rollercoaster that followed might be interesting. When I set-up my Amazon agency back in 2017, the biggest challenge was that we had too many potential clients. Basically, any consumer product brand in the world. Sounds like good news. But how on earth do you target such a big pool of people. Step forward the niche. A vital strategy to narrow your market and therefore target it properly. James Lovett did exactly that with his own Amazon agency. And I'm delighted that he's shared his story in the latest FounderON blog. Check it out - https://lnkd.in/ef46Cf7n // If you're a current or former founder with a story to tell, I'd love to share it with the FounderON audience. The mind of a founder can be a lonely place. When things go well, it's full of excitement and plans for world domination. But when things are tough, it's a non-stop series of worst case scenarios. My own business journey was pretty positive. Start-up to exit in 4 years. But that didn't mean there weren't bumps along the way. One particular month, forever known as 'Dark September', I thought I'd lost it all. I thought I was no longer up to the job. That I'd failed. My mentor at the time told me to pull myself together and get on with it. I did. And we did. And the rest is history. You can read about Dark September in my blog from last year here - https://lnkd.in/eBzzNgGc // Running a business is tough. Whenever I do a post about sales, I get the most opinions. People seem to feel pretty strongly about what you should focus on. (Often those same people run businesses that help you do it). So before writing a blog about sales, I thought I should get some data to back it up. Here's what I did: 1. I started, scaled and sold a business. 2. I spoke to over 200 founders of other businesses. 3. I started a new business that has grown quicker than the first one I started, scaled and sold. So, even if my observations are unpopular, at least they're backed by data. Click the link below to read about the 5 things that are stopping you sign clients (backed by data remember).
