In praise of holidays or ‘looking after kids in a hot place’

For the first time in over ten years I took a two week holiday. I’ve been trying and failing to take a chunk of August off for so long. I really recommend taking the last two weeks off, you can get a lot of work done in the first portion of the holidays (with difficulty in my case as my kids won’t go to camps), and then take a well earned break. I say ‘break’ but I was with two hyper and excitable kids so not exactly a holiday in the traditional sense of the word. Looking forward to September! 🤯 Pic of the kids at Disneyland Paris entertaining each other in the queues (or wrestling).

Looking back at a sustainability media list we compiled in 2018 and so many titles and podcasts in this world are no more 😣 I won't name them all for fear of rubbing salt in any wounds, but I counted 6 that are no longer in existence. I know lots of sustainable fashion companies have disappeared recently too, sadly. It did make me wonder why though. What do you think is the reason behind this? Oh, and if you're running a great new sustainability-focussed podcast we should know about, drop the details below...

I thought it might be interesting to look at what journalists really want at the moment. Here are some recent requests or parts of requests from national journalists for just some of our clients - many resulting in juicy coverage: “Super crunchy/detail led and not generalistic, very specific” “Some juicy lines on celebs and xx” “Any really crispy new angles or data…” “Could we get a timely angle for now?” (In addition to tips already provided). Two of these requests were from this morning, pre 9am. So, think crunchy, crispy, or juicy. 🍎

Three wins this week... 🥇 A returning client in the sports world. 🥈 An energising in-person brainstorm and lunch session with our long-time client Made in Britain - official in beautiful Worcestershire. 🥉 Some national coverage for Bridlington AFC and planning for some exciting August stories coming up... *And the real wins, managed to fit in the kids' sports day, play, assembly and a Colour Run.

“It’s not worth doing any PR in summer, everyone’s on holiday, August is dead…” 😵 Um, not true. Unless you live in France, where I started my career, then possibly things will slow to a halt in August. But in the twenty plus years I’ve been in PR I’ve noticed that the media doesn’t “stop” - it’s barely noticeable if it does slow down, and actually July and August can be fruitful months to try and get coverage. Let’s look at this summer in particular - lots of events to jump on and provide comment around: ✅ The election, July 4th. (the media can’t write about the election on this date, so a good day to prep stories on other topics) ✅ The Euros. Lots of tangential / fun stories you can potentially piggyback on here if you have European data/ a creative team. ✅ The Olympics (Paris v London stories?) And the usual summer events - Taylor Swift and concert madness, Glasto and festival season, Wimbledon, etc… Love to hear any stories from other PRs about successful campaigns and stories you’ve run in the summer. And perspectives from journalists.

3 Takeaways from Muck Rack’s “The State of PR 2024” Survey - 1️⃣ LinkedIn surplants X (Twitter) as PR professionals’ social media channel of choice 50% to 16% - with 61% saying they want to use it more. Now the report didn’t ask what PRs are using social media for but at Frame we use LinkedIn to engage with clients and other PR pros, follow business news, create content for our clients, and interact with journalists. We are using it far more than we are X, and hear that from our PR agency connections too. 2️⃣ Change is coming with a more fragmented media landscape making it harder to secure traditional earned media in the same old places. Podcasts, newsletters, forums - we're reaching out to more people, in varied and different places. Data analytics is coming into PR agencies' workflow. We already use industry leading tools to analyse and evaluate results. And on securing coverage… 3️⃣ Old fashioned connections matter. 83% of pitches are made 1:1 to specific journalists, with relevance being the most important factor in securing coverage. With so much experience in our team, we know the journalists and the subjects they cover, giving our stories the best shot at cut through. And we never mass-blast releases out. Personalised approaches still win every time.

The other day our founder Julie mentioned some good PR & comms podcasts. This is a new one to look out for from Ros Atkins, the master of concise communication and author of The Art of Explanation (great audio book, and it's now out in paperback). Really pleased to see the BBC giving the subject of communication such a platform at the moment.

Here’s something we’ve been working on for a good while. With BBC Radio 4 and Listen, I'm doing a new podcast where I seek out some of the best communicators - and find out how they do it. I’ve loved hearing their different approaches - I've learned a great deal, and I hope listeners will too. I'll be posting more about the series in the coming weeks. It arrives in late June. There are more details on this and lots of other new BBC titles here. Plus information on a new partnership between the BBC and Lemonada Media . https://lnkd.in/etwVNqPg

    What is thought leadership…?

View profile for Julie Thompson Dredge, graphic

PR agency founder supporting ambitious start-ups, scale-ups & established businesses | Helping businesses stand out from the crowd and grow through intelligent, results-driven PR & social media | Founder - Frame PR

I’m preparing for a podcast appearance next week where I’ll be talking about thought leadership. It’s a term we use all the time in PR but it’s a phrase a lot of people find hard to define. I remember first hearing the term as a 22 year old from my then PR account director Harriet Rich and being a bit baffled by it. I sort of knew it meant ‘intelligent business people having brilliant thoughts’ but I wasn’t sure how that manifested as a PR tactic. These days it means quite a few things… -LinkedIn ‘chat’ as well as posts of all kind, including newsletters -Social media content in general, written by business leaders -Earned media, eg opinion pieces and commentary in the press -Paid for media, eg Forbes Council Thought leadership needs to connect with a reader, make them feel something and have a lasting impact for it to be defined as thought leadership. 💭🤔 In the time of ChatGPT it’s quite easy to try to fake being a thought leader. But for it to connect with a reader and have an impact it has to come from a place of emotion, for example that might be frustration at the state of an industry. And it has to be truly original thought. Food for thought for the weekend. #Thoughtleadership #PR #media
