#ZeroWasteWeek 🤔 🚌 Ding ding! Anyone arrived at destination Zero Waste yet? Lots of us are on the 'journey' but in reality, not many of us are quite there yet. 😅 To get anywhere close to Zero Waste is not always an easy ride but it's not impossible! Perhaps it's more just a 'way of life' that we can all strive towards. #ZeroWasteWeek this past week has been reminding us all about the many positive steps we can take towards the end goal of wasting nothing. Zero Waste Week sees millions of people from all around the world committing to reducing their landfill waste for one week during September - saving money, preserving resources and having fun in the process. Whether you choose to focus on clothes, food waste, packaging, furniture (or anything else!) the only thing you really need to do is change is your mindset. When we rethink our 'waste' and re-frame it as a valuable resource instead, it's easy to do. Just think before you throw. Someone, somewhere will always find a use for those things you no longer need! Making small changes that lead to more sustainable (and less!) consumption easily and effectively reduces waste, saves money and boosts the circular economy. Reuse is an easy and simple action that anyone can do but it has BIG and positive consequences. Keeping 'useful' items in circulation means that we can: ✅ Buy less ✅ Save money ✅ Preserve resources & save energy ✅ Cut emissions ✅ Help others So, what's not to love?! Head to your local Freegle community to 'Give Stuff and Get Stuff' all for FREE! Visit Freegle today and find your local community to help you get started on your Zero Waste and Reuse journey: www.ilovefreegle.org Find out more about the Zero Waste Week campaign here: https://lnkd.in/eKbxapz #ChooseToReuse #ZeroWaste #ZeroWasteWeek #FreegleFriday #JustFreegleIt #WasteNot #CircularEconomy

We're so excited to announce that we’ve been awarded £1.27 million in #NationalLottery funding, in partnership with Possible, to bring Fixing Factories to three new high streets across London! 🎉 We can’t wait to build on our learnings from our two popular Fixing Factory pilots in Brent and Camden and create spaces where people can bring in broken electronics and appliances to be fixed for free, while gaining the skills they need to make repairs themselves in the future. Read more about our plans 📰 https://lnkd.in/ed7ZTFa5 Thank you again to The National Lottery Community Fund, Climate Action Fund and National Lottery players 💚

Repair Cafes at festivals - music to our ears.

Not everyone knows this side of me, but I am passionate about reducing waste through repair. I set up my local Repair Café (https://lnkd.in/ekgzisxc) six years ago, saving over 1,200 kg of waste, and started The Repair Finder (www.therepairfinder.com) a year ago, making it easier for people to find a nearby (UK) repair professional. For the last few years, our family has been going to different festivals across the UK. I saw how much festival goers throw away and wondered: could a "Repair Café" at a music festival help? Would people even use it? The organisers of the Cambridge Folk Festival were open to trying it out, and so the idea became a reality a few weeks ago. I have shared my thoughts on how it went in a guest blog post over at The Restart Project, which you can read here: https://lnkd.in/eajk8H48

Social good tech projects should stick together. My main hat, and very snazzy it is, is Freegle, which helps people give and get stuff for free. But I have a jaunty side-hat for The Restart Project, which campaigns for right to repair and organises repair cafes. I couldn't sleep, so this morning I wrote a bit of code to publish Restart's repair cafe events into Freegle's section for community events. If you have a feed of local community events or volunteer opportunities and an API to go with it, let me know, and I'll see if we can integrate it. Time for a nap, now.

🎉 Freegle is delighted to have been nominated in partnership with Richmond and Wandsworth Councils for 'Best Partnership' in the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee’s (LARAC) Awards, 2024. The nomination relates to a project which commenced in April 2023, with funding from Wandsworth's Borough Council's Cost of Living Support fund. Freegle embarked on a new initiatve to increase levels of community reuse in Wandsworth. The broad aims of the project were to: ✅ Increase awareness of Freegle locally. ✅ Improve the levels of reuse within communities across the borough. ✅ Help residents navigate the pressures associated with the cost of living crisis. The initiative included targeted promotion of Freegle to social housing tenants and to the wider community. 💚 Physical posters with QR codes and tear off strips which were affixed to noticeboards around the borough, in locations such as food banks, libraries, places of worship, children's centres and supermarkets. 💚 Advertisements and articles about reuse and Freegle were placed in Wandsworth's council housing publication 'Homelife'. 💚 Freegle communicated directly with twenty one local community support organisations such as food banks, citizen's advice and community hubs, with information about the Freegle platform. 💚 A new user survey was conducted to gather information about what the new freeglers thought about reuse and how they had used Freegle since joining. Outcomes of the partnership were positive and included:- ✅ 120+ posters in targeted locations. ✅ 2151 new freeglers in the area. ✅ 131 tonnes of items (4810 individual items) were recorded as being reused through Freegle over the duration of the project, saving 66.8 tonnes of CO2e and generating £93,170 of social and economic benefit. ✅ 94% of the newly registered users surveyed had used Freegle since registering. Some comments from new Freegle users in Wandsworth included: “I'm new at freegle and I'm enjoying the experience. It's amazing how many people can find a new life for things that have been in my loft for ages.” “It's been fantastic. The people on the site are so helpful and reliable.” If you would like to know more about what we did and how, please get in touch with us at councils@ilovefreegle.org and we'll send you a copy of our report. Thank you to Michael Singham Richmond and Wandsworth Councils for your support and partnership. Thank you to Alex Bamford for photographic images. #CostOfLivingCrisis #Reuse #ReuseRocks #ReuseRevolution #LocalAuthorities #Communities #BehaviourChange #ClimateAction

Don't let anything go to waste - make sure you pass things on - someone, somewhere will always find a use for the things you no longer need! Read our Freegle user story below: "I live in a student area, there's so much waste!"   I freegle because I hate to see things that other people could use thrown away. I live in a student area and there's so much waste at the end of each year, first from students who don't want to pack up their stuff, then from landlords replacing things in rented properties. At the same time there are people in real need who could use these things, and also clever and artistic people who can mend or create what other people see as waste." (From Newcastle upon Tyne Freegle)   To avoid things going to waste at the start and the end of the academic year, make reuse the norm and #ChooseToReuse!
