With the Employment Rights Bill (ERB) introducing day-one rights, businesses may rethink how they hire. In the UK, “permanent” employment has always been a grey area—easier to navigate than in Europe but with more protections than the US. Now, companies will need to get hiring right from day one or face long-term consequences. Could this mean a shift towards temporary work instead of permanent roles? Chris Bryce and Andy Hallett break it down—watch the clip to hear their take. 👇 #EmploymentRightsBill #RecruitmentTrends #FlexibleWorkforce #FCSA #HiringStrategies

Recent reports have exposed UK recruitment firms involved in tax avoidance schemes, putting workers at serious financial risk. These payroll pirates operate by misclassifying earnings as loans to avoid paying tax, creating a nightmare when HMRC inevitably steps in to reclaim what’s owed. Too often, it’s the worker left footing the bill, facing unexpected tax demands they had no idea were coming. This is exactly why compliant payroll providers are so important. When done right, payroll isn’t just about processing wages, it’s about protecting workers, ensuring tax compliance, and maintaining the integrity of the UK’s workforce. Here’s what working with a reputable, accredited payroll provider should guarantee: ✅ Proper Tax Compliance – All tax and National Insurance contributions are deducted and paid correctly, so workers don’t get hit with unexpected liabilities. ✅ Employment Rights – Holiday pay, sick pay, and pension contributions should be standard, not optional. ✅ Reduced Admin Burden – Payroll, tax calculations, and paperwork should be handled properly, letting contractors focus on their work. ✅ IR35 & Legal Compliance – The right provider helps navigate the complexities of IR35 and tax laws, reducing risk for both businesses and workers. 🚩 What needs to change? 1️⃣ Workers need to be cautious – If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If a payroll provider claims they can increase take-home pay while reducing tax, it’s worth a second look. 2️⃣ Recruiters must take responsibility – If you’re recommending a payroll provider, you need to know they’re compliant. Simply adding them to your PSL isn’t enough—due diligence is key. 3️⃣ Industry-wide accountability is crucial – Regulatory loopholes allow bad actors to operate. Accreditation from recognised bodies like FCSA is one of the best ways to ensure ethical and legal standards are met. 📢 What can you do? If you’re a contractor, freelancer, or recruitment agency, now is the time to review your payroll setup. Compliance isn’t just a tick-box exercise; it’s what protects workers, businesses, and the tax system as a whole. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has delivered the Spring Statement, and while there were no major tax or spending changes, there are big implications for payroll, recruitment, and compliance. 🔸 HMRC Crackdown on Tax Evasion – The government aims to recover £6.5bn per year by 2029/30 through increased compliance efforts, hiring more HMRC staff, and working with private debt collection agencies. 🔸 New Compliance Measures – Four consultations have been launched to tighten regulations on tax advisers, improve HMRC’s enforcement capabilities, and target tax avoidance schemes. 🔸 Fighting “Phoenixism” – HMRC, Companies House, and the Insolvency Service are cracking down on directors using insolvency to avoid tax liabilities, with enforcement measures set to double tax protection to £250m by 2026. 🔸 Expanding Making Tax Digital (MTD) – From April 2028, sole traders and landlords earning over £20k will be required to use MTD for income tax. FCSA continues to engage with policymakers to ensure compliance measures are fair, proportionate, and effective in protecting workers and businesses alike.
