Breaking 🚨 Last month, the court agreed with Friends of the Earth and South Lakes Action on Climate Change that the lifetime emissions of a proposed coal mine in Whitehaven (mostly from burning coal) weren't properly considered, and its approval was unlawful. With the deadline to appeal having now passed, it's now up to Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner to reconsider the original planning application by West Cumbria Mining – unless the company decides to abandon its plans by withdrawing it. The government must ensure that West Cumbria, and areas like it, are at the forefront of the transition to a green economy to get the jobs and investment that is urgently required. That's why we're calling on Keir Starmer to create a new Big Climate Plan that delivers a greener and fairer future for the UK. Add your name today ✍ https://lnkd.in/eeS-vECU https://lnkd.in/e_tzder8

Breaking 🚨 Global wildlife populations have shrunk by an average of 73% in the past 50 years. The Living Planet Report on the state of the natural world reveals there is widespread destruction of habitats, heavily linked to food production, and this is the biggest threat to wildlife. The loss of nature and the impacts of climate change are accelerating us towards watershed moments where we see irreversible change in ecosystems. Governments across the world have committed to protect 30% of the world's land and ocean area by 2030, so we need to see bold action to ensure these targets can be met and nature is protected ✊ https://lnkd.in/erT-PvCG

The pesticide the government may approve is highly toxic to bees and pollutes our rivers, harming aquatic life. To approve it would also contradict advice from expert advisors. The EU put an end to emergency exemptions for this pesticide in 2023 due to its harmful effects, yet the UK government could once again back-step. Bees and other pollinators are vital to our crops, our gardens and our countryside. The government must protect our wildlife by sticking to its election promises ✊ https://lnkd.in/emu3kHgr

BP had previously set a target to reduce its oil and gas output by 40% by 2030 but it is now planning to drop this target in February. It had also stated that it planned to boost spending on renewables. However, it sold all of its US onshore wind farms in September and has halted all bidding on new offshore wind projects. https://lnkd.in/eKQVmueB

A 12-month delay to a new law to combat deforestation will supposedly put 80,000 acres of forest at risk each day. The delay was a result of lobbying from governments and companies across the globe. With worldwide commitments for governments to protect 30% of the world's land and ocean area by 2030, we need to see bold action to ensure these targets can be met and nature is protected. https://lnkd.in/e9JkMbBm
