THE OCTOBER ISSUE IS OUT NOW 'I don't have a practice. That's for the kids. I'm an artist. I make art.’ — Tracey Emin In the new issue of frieze, Emily LaBarge profiles Tracey Emin on the occasion of her major retrospective at White Cube, London. Always more concerned with the ‘erotics of art' than hermeneutics, Emin maintains that her practice is a lived thing, and as such, choosing the body doesn't exclude the mind. The October Issue considers the potential of movement as an intellectual activity. In a columns section devoted to contemporary dance, artists and writers look to ways in which the body responds to time and material. In our features section, McKenzie Wark pens an essay on transfemininity and the difference between the pretty and the beautiful; Nobel Prize-winner Annie Ernaux writes about how photography helps us contend with mortality and ageing; and our cover artist, Jack O'Brien, speaks to Edward Gillman about the ways the ever-changing urban body of London has informed the fragility and eros of his sculpture. Titled 신·경(神經) – ‘Nerve or Divine Pathway’, the inaugural edition of Frieze LIVE at Frieze Seoul 2024 explores the potential of poetry as an impetus for performance art. Reflecting our current socio-political landscape, where radical politics often exploit or diminish the power of language, these performances emphasize the transformative power of poetic speech through the human body itself, suggesting new possibilities for communication. The title is a play on words referencing the layered meanings in traditional Chinese characters 신·경(神經), which can be translated as ‘nerve’ or ‘divine pathway’. This mirrors the artistic strategies used in the performances, which seek to expand syntax while directly engaging our senses, to produce fresh inspiration (영감:靈感). Featured artists: Cha Yeonså Hong Ji Young Jang Sumi Kim Wonyoung & Project YYIN (Rha Sinae, Choi Kisub) Jesse Chun Hit the link to find out more about the programme, and view the performance schedule for Frieze LIVE: https://brnw.ch/21wMaJH Frieze LIVE 2024 is presented in partnership with DYAD, a private members’ club launching in the heart of Cheongdam in 2025. #FriezeLIVE #FriezeSeoul
