This year’s statistics confirm that the COVID-19 pandemic has permanently altered mobility patterns, with remote work reducing commuting and seeing overall fuel consumption down around 10% (since before 2020) as the ‘new normal’. The historically high fuel prices, seen first in 2022 and only partially falling in 2023, will have had an impact on levels of demand. However, with fuels still accounting for over 90% of transport energy use, fuel demand remained relatively inelastic across the year with demand rising by 1% from 2022 levels. Great to see the announcement of a green hydrogen collaboration between SSE Thermal and EET Hydrogen at Stanlow. The project will deliver hydrogen to industrial offtakers in the region to support them to decarbonise their operations, helping to secure and grow jobs in the region. #hydrogen

Following the announcement this morning that refining operations will cease at Grangemouth in 2025 subject to consultation with employees, Elizabeth de Jong, our Chief Executive Officer, has issued the following statement: “We are very sad to hear that Grangemouth refinery is planning to become a fuels’ import terminal. As we have told Government, the fuels sector is vital for the nation’s energy security and net zero ambitions but faces difficult investment conditions in the UK as this decision shows. Today’s announcement must be a wake-up call for Government to work more closely with us and our member companies to address the long-term challenges facing the sector.” https://lnkd.in/e9Mmsv29 #Grangemouth #Refining #Fuels

As well as market-led changes, the past year has also seen significant policy and regulatory changes aimed at accelerating the UK's energy transition and ensuring energy security. Incentivising growing sales of electric vehicles has been the introduction of the Zero Emissions Vehicles Mandate, which will see vehicle manufacturers obligated to sell an increasing number of zero tailpipe emissions car and vans, which will reach 80% by 2030 from a starting rate of 22% in 2024. UK Government also announced the introduction of the Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) Mandate which will see 10% of all jet fuel demand in 2030 be met through SAFs. Given the expected growth of these new fuels, this year’s Fuels Statistics report includes new information on SAFs demand, production and future levels of the mandate to help track this emerging market segment. Another significant trend has been the continuing transition towards renewable energy sources. With the UK government's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, there has been a concerted push towards alternative fuels as well as hybrid and electric vehicles with both continuing to grow year on year. Data from the Department for Transport indicates a record number of EV registrations, despite the rate of growth slowing, although of all new vehicles sold, petrol vehicles still held the largest market share.
