Exciting news! The Hub’s Homes for Nature Guidance Document is now live for signatories on our members portal: https://lnkd.in/eay6jVk4. To join the scheme, please visit: https://lnkd.in/eiw5Eh7G Thank you to RSPB Action for Swifts Hedgehog Street for your contribution to the guidance document. With 28 homebuilders on board, and more joining frequently, we’re taking a major step towards providing the vital nesting bricks and boxes needed to support swift populations and other bird species. Those signed up to the pledge have committed to installing a bird-nesting brick or box for every new home built, as well as hedgehog highways, on every new development taken through planning from 1st September 2024. This groundbreaking project, led by the Hub’s On Site Nature Measures Working Group, aims to create a significant increase in wildlife habitats across new developments in the UK.  The comprehensive Homes for Nature Guidance Document is an invaluable resource providing detailed instructions on how to implement these crucial measures. It also covers SuDs, bat roosts, insect bricks and more, for those wanting to go beyond the mandatory commitment. By joining this initiative, homebuilders are not only contributing to biodiversity but also demonstrating their commitment to creating sustainable and nature-friendly communities. We encourage all developers to participate in this vital effort. Edward Lockhart-Mummery, CEO of the Future Homes Hub, sets out the case for the new homes sector to work to a single plan in his interview with Housebuilder Magazine. In this month’s edition of the Housebuilder Media, Ed discusses the importance of working with government, the net zero transition pathway and the upcoming Future Homes Conference and the collaboration needed to deliver change. “There are huge challenges we need to solve,” Ed says, while recognising that the industry is already making great progress in this area. And these will be showcased in the Future Homes Conference, which will be held on the 4th of December 2024 in Westminster. As the interviewer notes, the conference’s timing – just months after the introduction of a new pro-housing government - has become particularly opportune. The conference will focus on how the homebuilding sector can meet the challenge of building sustainable homes at scale, whilst meeting the UK’s ambitious net zero sustainability targets. The event will feature presentations from industry leaders, as well as breakout sessions on a variety of topics, such as the Future Homes Standard and biodiversity net gain. Our Head of Technical and Innovation, Adam Graveley, discusses the Hub’s Whole Life Conventions and Tool with Suzie Mayes in this Housebuilder Media article (on pages 64-65): https://lnkd.in/e_6g42vG At present, the predominant focus for homebuilders in meeting zero carbon goals is to reduce operational carbon on the homes built. However, to truly impact the reduction of the whole carbon output of a home, embodied carbon is key. The new homes sector has developed whole life carbon Conventions that provide a standardised approach to measure operational and embodied carbon to allow home builders to quantify and compare carbon reductions. To support this, the Hub has developed a simple calculation tool so that carbon calculations can be quickly carried out to inform design decisions. “The Hub’s embodied carbon implementation plan will provide a way forward for the industry, pending the government filling the policy gap. But the first hurdle to vault is how to measure embodied carbon consistently. Hence the tool and Conventions.” Want to learn more? Read the full article to find out more about how the tool and conventions can help enable proactive steps to reduce environmental impact: https://lnkd.in/e9dYUVxT #FutureHomesHub #EmbodiedCarbon #SustainableHomebuilding #NetZero #ClimateAction
