First books have arrive in Ukraine for our newest project - Svitlo Reads, an online library created by students who participated in the Global Social Leaders (GSL) programme. As part of the programme, they developed the library as a socially impactful initiative for the people of Ukraine. https://lnkd.in/ek7mwG4h Recognising the limited availability and high prices of English books in Ukraine, the students decided to address the issue by making reading more accessible and enjoyable. Books are donated and purchased by individuals and organisations in the UK, then shipped to Ukraine to be rented or sold at affordable prices to Ukrainians. You can support this initiative by either contributing to the running costs of the project or donating/purchasing books. For more information, please visit our website.

We’re delighted to launch our first Global Social Leaders Feel Good Friday (FGF) monthly newsletter for the 2024-25 academic year and whilst we have been sharing this newsletter for many years with our community on email, this is our first FGF on Linkedin! Already this year, we’ve celebrated Global Goals Week, welcomed 40 schools from 22 countries, delivered induction training for our Lead Teachers and run two of five live sessions for GSL students. In these newsletters, we will share social action opportunities, feel-good stories, spotlights on GSL projects, and opportunities for our wider network to get involved in GSL. We hope you enjoy! Please do share. Jonathan Harper FRSA & Katy Granville-Chapman Co-Founders Global Social Leaders

"Many people struggle to pay the bills and have neither the time nor the facilities to cook meals from scratch. Healthier food is also often more expensive than less healthy food. The report focuses on what we can do to ensure the food industry makes healthier food accessible and affordable for all." This report calls for a coordinated, cross-governmental approach to a healthy and sustainable food system. We welcome the landmark report from the House of Lords Select Committee on Food, Diet and Obesity. Since 2023, Future Foundations have been piloting CanTeam with the support of Big Change, we are transforming school canteens into community hubs that provide access to affordable and nutritious meals in a social setting. We have been working cross-sector, with schools, charities and catering industry to find what works and have learned a lot through UK wide research, focus groups and pilots in primary and secondary schools in London, Bedford and Maidenhead. We’re committed to doing our part to support the implementation of these crucial recommendations, ensuring that schools and communities can thrive through better access to nutritious food. There is a lot to take in from this report (and we will be spending more time reviewing it and exploring how best to support it) but what's clear, is that this should be a priority, and the evidence makes the case for action. I think we need to involve young people in the co-design (and implementation) of the solutions and have been inspired by the work that Professor Greta Defeyter has been doing to evidence what will make a difference in school food. I believe food is both the problem and the solution to many of the challenges we face and by focusing on transforming our food system we can create a brighter future for people & planet. Let's eat & thrive together #foodsystem #receipeforhealth

Proud to see Global Social Leaders' partnership with Svitlo Education featured on Page 9 of the Independent Schools Association (ISA) October Journal. The article explores "How to unlock the power of education during war". It is a great article showcasing the incredible work of Svitlo, led by Yuliya Kosko, who goes above and beyond to give #Ukrainian students access to enriching education! It features the GSL project Svitlo Reads and the role that #socialaction can play in helping young people take action on the issues that impact them. "At Svitlo, we focus on listening to our students’ needs, encouraging them not only to voice their concerns but also to suggest solutions that we can put into practice. Through our partnership with Global Social Leaders, a group of Svitlo students participated in a competition aimed at designing a socially impactful project. They identified the gap in access to English-language books in Ukraine, due to high prices and limited availability, and proposed the creation of an online library to address this issue. The students wanted to provide people from all backgrounds with access to a wide range of books on various subjects and cultures. This student project inspired us to take action, leading us to establish a physical library for Svitlo students. We will be campaigning to involve schools across the UK, as well as individuals, to donate books or purchase them and send them directly to our students in Ukraine. Alongside this initiative to provide access to physical books in English, we have partnered with Giglets, an online literacy resource. We are training our older students to lead guided reading sessions and reading clubs using Giglets’ online materials for younger students. This initiative not only enhances the English literacy of our younger students but also helps our older students develop teaching skills while further improving their own English proficiency." Inspiring afternoon yesterday at the Big Change Community Gathering 2024, we explored what kind of leadership is needed to create real, lasting change. Essie North kicked things off by sharing the incredible work they’ve been doing behind the scenes to review their theory of change and Hannah Cohen shared how this will play out in the support they will provide the BC community to maximise our impact. We took part in a World Café session, we had honest conversations about the challenges we’re facing, the support we need, and how we, as a community, can make a greater difference together. In the evening Aliyah Irabor-York hosted a great panel with Emmanuel Akpan-Inwang, Emma Redfern and Liz Robinson. We took part in a poll exploring the leadership qualities our community values most with the top ones being #integrity, #empathy, #kindness, and #authenticity. One takeaway from the panel that really resonated with me was the idea that education has become too focused on a ‘knowledge rich’ focus and we need to build an education which equally values the head, the heart and hands 🙌 This aligns with Future Foundations #socialaction programmes CanTeam and Global Social Leaders —helping young people grow as whole, compassionate leaders who are equipped to be leaders in their lives & society. I enjoyed taking time to pause, reflect & reconnect with my fellow Big Education Finalists & the BC community and in true CanTeam style, we shared great food & BIG conversations. A big thank you to the Big Change team for organising such a great day and extending the invite to my colleague Conny D.. I’m feeling inspired, connected, and tired today - the sign of a great event 🤩 Let’s eat and thrive together! 🚀

Excited to return yesterday to Townley Grammar School to launch CanTeam for round 2 pilot with Shenel S. 🚀 This time we are collaborating with Jude Quinn Director of Tech & Innovation & are running the programme within a Food Tech curriculum following a new #projectbasedlearning training. This is supported by a new Crew manual & online resources for student volunteers which takes them on a journey as they decide their roles, their teams, and how they will shape, deliver & measure the impact of their CanTeam #afterschool dining experience events. The journey has been designed with support from Joe Pardoe following a 6 course meal which encourages the students to think about how we currently often consume food fast which isn’t great for people or planet 🌍 & then challenges them to think about how they will create a dining experience that will be create a memberable meal for all involved, with great food and connection which creates community. Excited to return to dine at a future #CanTeam at Townley designed by the students. This pilot is possible thanks to the support of Big Change #bigedchallenge & partnership of Townley. Nevita Pandya MBE has supported CanTeam from day one. We ran focus groups at Townley before we piloted our first events and our second pilot was run with Dan Rouse at Townley with fantastic feedback which informed our plans for how we would scale in 2024-25. Could not agree more with Professor Greta Defeyter call to action to the government & all those involved in #schoolfood ... "I truly believe that now is the time for the government to look carefully at food across the entire school day and address the problems of an underfunded, patchwork system. Codesigning a system with providers and service users that is codesigned to deliver!" We are with you at Future Foundations & CanTeam

Codesigning better programmes and outcomes with children and young people.

I was sent these photos of two school meals served in a school in the North East of England. As I have said, on many occasions, we need to ensure that we all work together to fix the school food system in terms of funding, standards, changes to dietary preferences, locally sourced produce etc. before rolling out a programme that clearly needs attention. There are great examples of school food but also some abysmal examples. Ideally, we need a good level of service across England regardless of geography or school. I truly believe that now is the time for the government to look carefully at food across the entire school day and address the problems of an underfunded, patchwork system. Codesigning a system with providers and service users that is codesigned to deliver! Department for Education Schools North East Kim McGuinness

One week on from chairing a panel discussing ‘How do we reduce conflict & foster peace in our communities’, I’m reflecting on how vital this conversation is, especially with our students. During #globalgoals week, Global Social Leaders explored in this live webinar how educators and young people can be equipped with the tools and insights to create student-led projects that have a real impact, promoting peace and addressing the effects of conflict. Yuliya Kosko, the founder of Svitlo Education shared their incredible work supporting students in #Ukraine with a rich & engaging curriculum. We heard from students at Svitlo School, who gave unique insights into living in a country experiencing conflict. Despite the challenges, they are continuing their education and leading a #socialaction project supported by Global Social Leaders to create libraries that provide younger students with access to English books. William Dalziel from Never Such Innocence presented how they offer tools for young people (aged 9-18) to reflect on the realities of war and conflict, nurturing the next generation of thinkers, leaders, and peacebuilders through the arts. They also highlighted their international competition, now open for entries, inspiring cultural exchange and collaboration.
