There's an update on B Lab's New B Corp Standards 🚀 Yesterday, B Lab released their second consultation summary report, providing a comprehensive overview of the feedback on the latest draft of the new B Corp standards. Our team at Futureproof has reviewed the report in detail (using a sustainably sourced fine-tooth comb, of course 🌱). Here are the essential highlights: 🃏 8 Topic Areas: The proposed 10 topics have been condensed into 8. "Workplace culture" and "fair wages" are now combined into a Fair Work topic, covering salaries, contracts, overtime, and shift/zero-hour workers—requiring data verification. The Complementary Impact topic area will be removed. 🔬 Conflict Zones: There will be heightened due diligence in conflict-affected situations, aiming for a more consistent approach from B Lab. 🏭 Measuring Emissions and Net Zero: All companies will now be required to measure Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions to comply. Previously optional, Scope 3 emissions measurement will become mandatory, along with setting reduction targets. 💵 Tax: A deeper evaluation of company tax practices will align with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards. 🌟 Scoring: Points are out! Instead, companies will receive "Meets" or "Exceeds" performance marks for each of the 8 topic areas. B Lab will also assess companies based on their Impact Business Model (IBM) under four categories, from Developing to Leader. Further clarity on compliance for each category is promised. 📅 Timeline: The new standards will be published in early 2025. B Lab is already training staff internally and is working on a transition plan for new and existing B Corps. Over the past two decades, ESG has evolved from a niche concept into a mainstream approach that shapes how businesses operate and investors allocate capital. The roots of ESG can be traced back to the early 2000s, when the United Nations launched initiatives like the Global Compact and published the "Who Cares Wins" report in 2004, which officially coined the term ESG. This period also saw the establishment of the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) in 2006, further embedding ESG considerations into the financial sector. The growth of ESG has been driven by a growing recognition that sustainable business practices are essential for long-term success. Companies have increasingly adopted ESG metrics to enhance their environmental stewardship, improve social impact, and strengthen governance structures. This shift has been supported by major frameworks such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) - with regulatory standards coming into effect over the next couple of years in the likes of EU's CSRD and UK's SRS. Amidst recent challenges, including accusations of greenwashing and fluctuating investor enthusiasm, the core tenets of ESG have stood strong. The COVID-19 pandemic served as a litmus test, highlighting the resilience of companies with robust ESG practices. This crisis underscored the importance of sustainability in navigating global upheavals. As we commemorate this 20-year journey, it becomes evident that ESG is not a fleeting trend but a vital pillar of modern business strategy.
