Founder of Best Workplaces in Travel; Chair at Gail Kenny Executive Recruitment; Ambassador at Working With Cancer and Family Holiday Charity
Last night, together with the Working With Cancer team, I attended an extraordinary event where "The Bevan Employer & Cancer Report" in Westminster in conjunction with the Institute for Employment Studies was launched. To say am I proud to be associated with Working With Cancer is an understatement. Our founder, Barbara Wilson started the social enterprise after her own experience breast cancer. In fact, all the team have experienced cancer in some way. Over the last decade, Barbara has remained passionate and dedicated to improving work and cancer services throughout the UK, Europe and beyond. The event provided an opportunity to focus on the purpose of the Bevan report research and to highlight the findings. We would also like to thank the wonderful panel who took part in a very insightful discussion about working with cancer. Political Editor of The Sunday Times, Caroline Wheeler did a fantastic job of chairing the expert panel which included Kelly McCabe co-founder at Perci Health, Charlotte Frost, Co-Head of Culture, Talent and Inclusion, Schroders and our founder, Barbara Wilson. The discussion really highlighted where there are gaps in employer support and policies and how some simple adjustments in the workplace could make a big difference to those impacted by cancer. Big thanks to Nicky Lyle, Kate Popham and Jessica Howell from Hotelplan UK for coming along. They are leading the way in the travel industry by demonstrating good practice, and I am in discussion with several other travel companies to come on board. This isn't cancer washing. f you’re a HR professional and haven’t already, please download and read the report via the link below to access the findings and recommendations and support the Working with Cancer Pledge. 👇 Some key findings which are quite alarming: 🔹 48% of respondents expressed concern about line managers saying the wrong thing and 31% lacked confidence in the ability of their line managers to have difficult conversations. 🔹 96% of respondents reported that their companies do not have cancer-specific policies and only 18% reported collecting data on the number of employees with a cancer diagnosis. 🔹 Only half (54%) of respondents knew about the Access to Work scheme and a quarter (25%) reported a lack of understanding of disability legislation. We need to educate our leaders and have the important conversation around cancer in the workplace. Together we can make a difference. https://lnkd.in/eA22-GmV https://lnkd.in/dnHh_Va #Workingwithcancer

Thanks for sharing "how engaged is your tribe" Chris. We agree that engagement is directly related to trust. How do you know if your employees are engaged? One of the easiest ways to assess your team is to have them participate in our Employee Engagement Survey annually. Be sure to listen and act upon make cultural changes based on the feedback they give you around safety, belonging, mattering. Our annual employee survey allows employees to add comments and guarantees anonymity is protected. This is crucial in gaining a true understanding of their engagement levels and identifying areas for improvement. By comparing your perceived level of engagement with the actual feedback received, you're able to uncover blind spots and gain a more accurate understanding of your team's sentiment. This can help you identify potential issues that may not be immediately apparent, such as: - Unmet needs or expectations - Frustrations with processes or systems - Lack of recognition or appreciation - Inadequate training or resources - Poor communication or transparency By acknowledging and addressing these blind spots, you can take proactive steps to increase team engagement and create a more positive and productive work environment. This may involve implementing changes to processes, providing additional training or resources, or simply being more open and transparent in your communication including purpose and mission. Our survey opens on the 2nd December, so do take part in this industry wide people initiative. #employeeengagement #leadership #employeesurvey #worklifebalance #transparency #wellbeing #purpose #mission #values Korero Forbes Gail Kenny Chris Orme edyn Christine Comaford https://lnkd.in/eRzxGZUk
As a leader in a new organisation with an amazing product and a sales team who are passionate, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and have a strong desire to succeed, I am working to create a motivational environment in which they can flourish. Our company exists to provide products and services that make people’s lives better and that solve problems. But a funny thing happens when our teams don’t feel connected. Productivity decreases, our teams become disengaged and our profits plummet. Creating a culture that is engaged that trusts their leader isn’t as cosmic as it seems, there is a formula. Shared Identity + Profound Meaning = Tribe = Trust I love this HBR article that tells you how to deliver this formula (link in comments). #hbr #trust #belonging #mattering

Here at Gail Kenny Executive Recruitment, we have always been advocates of flexible working -opening up opportunity for both employers and employees alike. We understand and respect the varying positions people have on this matter, but we practice what we preach, having not had an office now for five years - and all of #TeamGK working remotely. The feeling of 'together' is always there and we ensure lines of communication are always open. It feels very natural for us all to be independently working, but as part of a team! We are currently seeing some companies across the industry changing their hybrid working policies and some pushing for much more office time, so our very own Ian Brooks spoke to Travel Weekly UK to share his thoughts and you can read more below. We would love to hear what you think - and if your business is changing - in either direction... #travel #travelandtourism #hospitality #talentacquisition #hr #business #remoteworking #flexibleworking #hybridworking #workplace #workfromanywhere #office https://lnkd.in/eZzC9KwE

Very sad news to hear about Sir Chris Hoy’s update about his cancer diagnosis over the weekend. His openness about the challenging path that lies ahead for him over the next few years highlights the reality that sadly a cancer diagnosis can impact anyone. At 48, as well as being an Olympic athlete, Chris is a husband and a parent to two young children, hearing that your cancer is terminal is the most devastating news to hear. After taking some time away from the media spotlight to process his diagnosis he has since spoken very frankly about the prospect of having two to four years life expectancy and of his intentions to stay positive, appreciate life and find joy. Our thoughts are with Chris and his family right now and for anyone else who is impacted by a terminal cancer diagnosis. Navigating relationships, responsibilities, work and self-care is not an easy task especially when you’re also managing the difficulties of having cancer. The more support, understanding and awareness that we can have makes a big difference to those who need it most. If you are struggling with aspects of your own cancer diagnosis and treatment around work or you're an employer who wants to better support employees affected by cancer, get in touch to find out more about how we can help. https://lnkd.in/eSs9aQFU #workingwithcancer #terminalcancer *article shared from the The Independent
