The work of the Global Industry Alliance for Marine Biosafety has a significant impact and benefit for biofouling and the maritime sector as a whole. The members identify gaps and commission research, studies, and development of awareness-raising material for the sector. During the second quarterly meeting of 2024 in addition to the discussed ongoing activities, the members also discussed and agreed on the need for a Vice-Chair. As a result of the discussions Mr. Simon Doran has been re-elected as the Chair, and Ms. Abigail Robinson was elected as the vice-chair of the GIA for Marine Biosafety, both of whom will take up their posts until May 2025. Lastly, the members had the opportunity to welcome the last new member PPG Protective & Marine Coatings, who joined at the beginning of 2024. The GloFouling Partnerships is a global project executed by IMO to promote ships’ biofouling management.
About us
The GloFouling Partnerships will drive actions to implement the IMO Guidelines for the control and management of ships' biofouling, which provide a globally consistent approach on how biofouling should be controlled and managed to minimize the transfer of invasive aquatic species through ships' hulls. The IMO Guidelines are applicable to wide range of shipping and offshore industries. To support a wide implementation of the Guidelines, the Project will help develop global best practices and tools and demonstrate practical ways of overcoming barriers for their implementation in 12 developing countries. The project will also look at creating and enabling an environment for technology development and transfer, including via the creation of a Global Shipping Industry Alliance (GIA) for Marine Biosafety.

Congratulations to our sister project IMO-NORAD TEST Biofouling project for a very successful demonstration of in-water cleaning taken place yesterday in Port of Balboa, Panama City. The demonstration was organized for participants from the Latin America and the Caribbean region to learn about sustainable biofouling management solutions. The in-water cleaning technology uses adjustable high pressure seawater jets to remove hull fouling and collects the waste and was provided by HullWiper Ltd, a member of the Global Industry Alliance of GEF-UNDP-IMO GloFouling Partnerships. Next on Thursday and Friday comes the Latin America and Caribbean Women in Maritime - Biofouling Management Workshop. Stay tuned! #WomenInBiofouling
Day 3 of our event marked a successful delivery of an in-water cleaning technology demonstration! This hands-on demonstration allowed more than a 100 participants to gain deeper understanding of the complexity involved in biofouling management. The participants were able to interact with the team of experts from HullWiper Ltd and Talleres Industriales, asking insightful questions about the technology’s capabilities, operations efficiency and environmental impact. HullWiper Ltd showcased the deployment of its technology in the water, its attachment to the vessel and the detailed functioning of its adjustable high pressure seawater jets to remove hull fouling. This event marks a significant step forward for developing countries in capacitating and advancing sustainable biofouling solutions. Sincere appreciation goes to our collaborative partners: MTCC Caribbean MTCC Latin America, Talleres Industriales, HullWiper Ltd, Ashley Coutts, Lino Arosemena, John Armstrong, GEF-UNDP-IMO GloFouling Partnerships, Lilia Khodjet El Khil, PhD International Maritime Organization, Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation
