On the 3 October 2024, the GloFouling Partnerships Global Industry Alliance (#GIA) came together for the penultimate meeting ahead of the 3rd Forum in Busan, with a focus on impactful projects addressing biofouling. For the first time since its inception, nearly all members gathered in person to celebrate the alliance's milestones. These include the creation of awareness-raising materials such as a documentary, commissioning research studies to support accademia and industry efforts to combat #biofouling. These achievements represent significant strides toward preserving marine life and safeguarding livelihoods for the long term. The GloFouling Partnerships is a global project executed by IMO to promote ships’ biofouling management.
About us
The GloFouling Partnerships will drive actions to implement the IMO Guidelines for the control and management of ships' biofouling, which provide a globally consistent approach on how biofouling should be controlled and managed to minimize the transfer of invasive aquatic species through ships' hulls. The IMO Guidelines are applicable to wide range of shipping and offshore industries. To support a wide implementation of the Guidelines, the Project will help develop global best practices and tools and demonstrate practical ways of overcoming barriers for their implementation in 12 developing countries. The project will also look at creating and enabling an environment for technology development and transfer, including via the creation of a Global Shipping Industry Alliance (GIA) for Marine Biosafety.

Our Strategic Partner BIMCO is asking industry views on biofouling management. Complete the survey here if you are interested ⬇️
Your views needed – please complete our new biofouling survey Why participate? In 2023 the IMO adopted new “Guidelines for the control and management of ships' biofouling to minimize the transfer of invasive aquatic species" (the Biofouling Guidelines) which are intended to provide a globally consistent approach to the management of biofouling. At present work at IMO is focussed on providing guidance on inspections and in-water cleaning - two elements that have significant influence on ship operations. As such it is extremely important that shipowners have their say in what is practical and what is needed to realise the benefits of biofouling management in, for example, energy efficiency and GHG reductions. BIMCO will use the outcome to provide evidence-based information on industry practices to help ensure that IMO guidelines are pragmatic and practical. The work of the Global Industry Alliance for Marine Biosafety has a significant impact and benefit for biofouling and the maritime sector as a whole. The members identify gaps and commission research, studies, and development of awareness-raising material for the sector. During the second quarterly meeting of 2024 in addition to the discussed ongoing activities, the members also discussed and agreed on the need for a Vice-Chair. As a result of the discussions Mr. Simon Doran has been re-elected as the Chair, and Ms. Abigail Robinson was elected as the vice-chair of the GIA for Marine Biosafety, both of whom will take up their posts until May 2025. Lastly, the members had the opportunity to welcome the last new member PPG Protective & Marine Coatings, who joined at the beginning of 2024.
