A real coup for us as we welcome Jonathan to lead on marketing: he brings Board-level marketing experience at absolutely top-tier digital firms like Moneysupermarket, Lastminute.com and Sage, as well as energy/renewables companies including Hive, Pod Point and Cotswold Energy Solutions. We have deliberately kept a low profile while we build the best digital home retrofit business in the UK; now is the time to start talking about it!

The new Genous algorithm is up! Try our Home Check to see how much money and carbon you could save by retrofitting your home. You can book an in-person survey online for the most accurate answers and broadest range of interventions and then we can develop your plan with you and get the work done for you with the best providers at a sensible cost.
If you’ve checked in on Genous recently, you may have seen that our next-generation digital-twinning tech platform is now up and running. This integrates home heating and electric, cars and home, and the impact of multiple measures on your home energy costs, EPC and carbon emissions – and budgets the programme for you. We’ve been using it with our own customers (and those of several financial institutions) since Christmas, and feedback has been strong – it’s not just a massive leap forwards from our previous algorithm; there is nothing out there that can do what this can do. So now we’re happy to let people know about it and, if you’re interested in home retrofit or know someone who is, please go to https://genous.earth and try our Home Check. To get the most out of it, you really need one of our in-person surveys so we can feed the system hundreds of data-points to get a really detailed and robust set of conclusions, but even a few questions tell us a lot. And, of course, Genous can get whatever you need done without hassle, to quality and with sensible pricing: insulation, glazing, solar PV, heat pumps, smart energy efficiency tech or even an EV. Our recent work for a leading building society showed that, on 100 sample EPC C-G properties, there were only four where we couldn’t deliver a >6.5% projected annual (post-tax) return. If you have the money to invest, this is a smart thing to do as well as being good environmentally; a win for your finances and a win for the planet.

Will a heat pump work when its freezing outside? First off, a heat pump is a freezer, instead of freezing your food, its job is to freeze in the garden. If you go to your freezer what temperature is it? Generally, you’ll find its around -20C and has been the whole time you’ve had it (which could be several years). Heat pumps are exactly the same technology as a freezer. So, if your freezer works at -20C your heat pump will too. In every house, as it gets colder outside the amount of heat we need goes up. If you look at the output data for a heat pump, they don’t stop working when it gets colder it's just their output slowly falls. For example, your unit can give 7097 Watts at 0 degrees C ambient but only 2615 Watts at -20C. But it’s never -10C for more than a few hours in the UK and the house will have heat stored in the bricks and mortar, meaning it will take time to drop in temperature. The skill of the designer is to size the heat pump to be big enough to maintain the desired temperature in every room, even when the coldest weather hits. At Genous we can help discuss your options and find the right solution for your home. Getting big gas-using houses to switch to heat-pumps can really make a difference on emissions. An average gas boiler in one of the Britain’s top 10% of gas-intensive postcodes emits 4.6 tonnes of CO2 per year, which on its own is equivalent to more than half the total emissions of an average UK citizen. Think about making the move to a heat pump, it really is worth it. http://genous.earth #heatpumptechnology #energyefficiency #lowcarbonenergy
