September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day. The day is an opportunity to shift from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support in having open conversations that can help prevent suicides. Sadly workers in construction are now nearly four times more likely to take their own lives than in other sectors. We appreciate how complex the topic is but also how important spotting signs early can be. We have therefore amongst other things, committed to at least 10% of our workforce being mental health first aiders, to match our physical health first aiders. These first aiders are also found at multiple levels across the business as we want to make asking for help as easy as possible. Last month Tim Clegg and Will Allen attended the European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering #ecsmge in Lisbon. Hosted every 4 years, it brings together the greatest minds in the industry to discuss the latest developments. So what did we learn? We learnt how important instrumentation was during the HS2 heave trials on the C2/C3 section. Not only helping to understand real-world behaviour but also allowing the refinement of the design to remove both cost and carbon, with 23km of piling length removed. As a supplier to this section, it was great to see the real-world benefits of instrumentation on a global stage, in the presentation authored by Georgios Katsigiannis and presented by Maria Dimitriadi We also learnt about how automatic monitoring can show trends of movement during delays in projects with a presentation by Andre Silva Sometimes projects are left mid-construction with manual monitoring often not performed, however with automatic systems running in the background insights can be gained, with a lower cost. We also heard about how IOT and AI can be used within monitoring and the wider construction industry. Highlighting how remote, automatic data can allow teams to collaborate across the globe. It was great to see our geotechnical instrumentation industry so well represented, alongside a dedicated workshop stream on field measurements and the observational method.
