Today will be a day England’s Megan Dennis cherishes forever as she clinches her first professional win at the inaugural Get Golfing Women’s Golf Championship.
It’s a full circle moment for the 25-year-old, who first learnt to play golf at the Club at Mill Green, the venue for this week.
It was a shaky start for the Woburn based golfer, who carded a bogey and a double bogey before any birdie dropped.
Two consecutive birdies on holes six and seven got the Englishwoman back in the game.
After another bogey on the par-four eighth hole, Dennis fired up the flatstick on the back nine to sink three birdies on holes 11 and 13 before a fabulous 33 feet putt on the 17th to give her a two-shot leading heading into the final hole.
“I’m shocked. I had no idea where I was standing until I got my first ball on the 18th green.
“I said to my caddie- should I know? Do I want to know? I asked him and he said I had a two-shot lead. So, I knew I just had to two putt the last.
“I’m so excited. I can’t believe that I managed to string together a good round on the final day.”
It’s a pinnacle time for Dennis to clinch a win, as entering this tournament she was sitting way outside the top 10 in 16th on the LETAS Order of Merit, 351.27 points away from the top seven cards.
Now Dennis sits fifth with 993.73 points.
“I was nervous in the first few holes and just made a mistake of one tee box. All I was trying to do all day was play my own game.
“If I did that, I knew I would give myself birdie chances and the finish line wouldn’t be far away.”
It was a family affair for Dennis who enjoyed the privilege of winning in front of a home crowd, in front of her grandparents, parents and extended family.
“It was my dad’s birthday yesterday. So, we will have my grandparents around tonight. We will go for a couple of drinks and some good food so I’m really looking forward to it.
“It’s crazy to hear that I’ve got my first win. It means the world. As I’ve said before. Obviously, everyone is in pursuit of an LET card.
“I knew what I had to do coming into this final week.
“I’m just lost for words at the minute. Hopefully I can enjoy it in the next coming days.”
This was the first year for the Get Golfing Women’s Golf Championship and will be a week not to forget anytime soon.
With the biggest prize fund this season and the largest field, this tournament displayed the very best of women’s professional golf.
Speaking about the mammoth effort behind the tournament, Dennis said: “Everyone’s done their best to make sure this week is great.
“I can’t thank them enough for all the time and effort that they’ve put in to making it great. Not just on the golf course, off the golf course as well.”
LETAS Order of Merit leader, Sweden’s Kajsa Arwefjall finished second on five-under-par whilst Austria’s Katharina Muehlbauer finished solo third on four-under-par.
