Identifying Impacts, Risks and Opportunities is a critical step of the CSRD journey. This step goes hand-in-hand with identifying material sustainability matters (also known as ESRS sub-sub-topics). Under the CSRD, companies must identify key sustainability matters and evaluate them from the double materiality perspective. Companies will typically adopt a qualitative approach. This means reviewing internal reports and conducting stakeholder engagement across business operations and the value chain. Examples of engagements include workshops, surveys and interviews - as well as consultations with experts. But this is not the gold standard. The gold standard is this: to complement the qualitative approach with a quantitative analysis that offers objective, science-backed and data-driven insights. That way, you get the best of both worlds. As companies and investors wake up to the importance of measuring their nature risks, dependencies and impacts, demand for data is booming. Data providers including GIST Impact, NatureMetrics and Clarity AI told me that this is largely being driven by mandatory requirements like the CSRD or the introduction of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). And as demand grows, so too does the specificity of information required - meaning 'ground data' has become a particularly hot request. AI is also proving to be a game changer for data providers who are using it for estimations and cleaning up data. Whilst they recognised the risks involved, all were positive about the opportunities it could offer the nature data space. While nature data can seem an overwhelmingly complex thing to get to grips with, and data gaps still do remain, it's becoming simply unavoidable for investors and companies alike. As companies prepare to report under the CSRD, many will wonder - is it best to take a qualitative or a quantitative approach? According to EFRAG, the technical adviser to the European Commission, both are allowed. But one is the gold standard.
