About us

GWWC is a community of effective givers. We’re on a mission to make giving effectively and significantly a cultural norm. Home of the 🔸10% Pledge. We help donors to find the world’s most pressing problems and identify the best charities working to solve them. We’re best known for the 10% Pledge. Over 8,000 people people have pledged to give 10% of their lifetime income to the most effective charities. Together we’ve already given over 250 million dollars and pledged over 3 billion. We all have incredible opportunity to improve the world through charitable giving. Together, we can make the world much better for all its inhabitants, and for the generations to come. -- Giving What We Can is an Effective Ventures project. Did you know there is more than one way to take an effective giving pledge with Giving What We Can? While we’re best known for the 🔸 10% Pledge (donate 10% of your income until you retire) we have several other pledge options: • The Trial Pledge: Pledge a custom percentage of income (as low as 1%) for a custom period of time (as little as 6 months) • The Further Pledge: Choose an allowance to live on and donate everything you earn above that • Company Pledge: Donate 10% or more of your company’s annual profits We also have the option to pledge a percentage of your wealth instead of income! We’re clearing up misconceptions like this one so you can be properly informed! Read more in this article: https://lnkd.in/dwKQRh5S

While it might seem like pledging is just formalizing what you already do, there’s more to it than meets the eye. ✨ The 10% Pledge is more than just a commitment to giving... It’s a way to help entrench the idea of donating a portion of our income to the most impactful organisations and causes. 🌍 🧡 When you sign the pledge, you’re not only staying true to your values — you’re helping to set a new social norm in charitable giving. Here’s why your name on the list matters: 1️⃣ Social proof: The longer the list of pledgers, the more it shows that effective giving is a shared value. 2️⃣ Influence: If even one or two people in your network decide to pledge, that can lead to a significant collective impact over time. 3️⃣ Early adoption: The earlier you get involved, the more you help drive change. Movements gain momentum because of people like you who are willing to act before it's the norm. Already giving 10%? You've done the hard part. Why not make it official? It could encourage others to do the same, multiplying your impact. 🙌 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dwKQRh5S

I'm very happy to share that I have taken the Giving What We Can 10% Pledge, committing to donating 10% of my lifelong income to effective, high impact charities. If you think it's a bit weird that I'm posting about it, well, so do I! I won't go into details as to why I decided to make this post, but I recommend reading the book The Life You Can Save by Peter Singer, you'll understand why. It's easy to feel powerless and hopeless in this world of large scale, complex problems - I know I did. It's global warming, extreme poverty, so much negative news everywhere. But reading this book had a profound impact on me. There is actually something we can do, right now, that'll have an immediate and significant positive impact on the world, and if enough people do it the impact would be far larger than imaginable. We would: - End extreme poverty for at least a year; - Double all clean energy R&D funding; - End world hunger; - Provide water and sanitation for everyone on the planet; - And much more. So if you can spare a few hours of your time consider reading The Life You Can Save, or visit the Giving What We Can website. Or, even better, ask me about it!

We love seeing how creative our community is when it comes to raising money for effective charities! For example, 10% Pledger Rémi Turquier recently created an awesome fundraiser page through Giving What We Can called “Remi is Selling Stuff in Davis.” Their idea is to collect donations as payment for their moving sale instead of cash! Remi was inspired by this great post: https://lnkd.in/dQPsTTim Good luck Remi! Thank you for this brilliant example of how many ways there are to raise funds (and awareness) for effective giving!

Usually, we bust myths about global poverty, global income distribution, or the huge variations in charity efficacy. 🔍 Today, we’re busting myths about our 10% Pledge, a public commitment to give at least 10% of income to highly effective charities. Although almost 9000 people have taken the Pledge, we’ve noticed some misconceptions about how it works. Let’s clear them up: ✴️ You don't have to donate at least 10% of your income EACH year – the 10% Pledge is a commitment to donate at least 10% of your lifetime income. Not all years are equal financially, so you have the option to skip a donation in certain years and “catch up” later. In some cases, this can be beneficial for tax purposes — for example, some US pledgers choose to “bunch” their donations by giving a large sum every 2-3 years instead of a smaller sum annually. Curious about the other myths we want to bust? Read the full post to learn more: https://lnkd.in/dwKQRh5S
