Usually, we bust myths about global poverty, global income distribution, or the huge variations in charity efficacy. 🔍 Today, we’re busting myths about our 10% Pledge, a public commitment to give at least 10% of income to highly effective charities. Although almost 9000 people have taken the Pledge, we’ve noticed some misconceptions about how it works. Let’s clear them up: ✴️ You don't have to donate at least 10% of your income EACH year – the 10% Pledge is a commitment to donate at least 10% of your lifetime income. Not all years are equal financially, so you have the option to skip a donation in certain years and “catch up” later. In some cases, this can be beneficial for tax purposes — for example, some US pledgers choose to “bunch” their donations by giving a large sum every 2-3 years instead of a smaller sum annually. Curious about the other myths we want to bust? Read the full post to learn more: https://lnkd.in/dwKQRh5S

The best charities are not just a bit better than the average ones – the most cost-effective charities can have as much as 100 times more impact. That is why Giving What We Can exists to direct donations to the organisations that can do the most good with it. This article by Our World in Data provides a wonderful introduction to the principles behind effective giving and the vast differences in the efficacy of different interventions — consider sending it to a friend! https://lnkd.in/gG2cN9Se

We're launching a Pledge Advocacy Program! Starting conversations about the giving pledge with friends, family, or colleagues can be daunting—but it's one of the most powerful ways to spread the word. That's why we’re creating a supportive program to help our community members feel more confident in talking about their pledges. If you're interested in shaping this program and boosting your confidence in discussing your giving, you can join one of our 8-week pilots, starting Monday, 30 September or 11 November. Interested? Let us know by filling out this form: https://lnkd.in/dT5ApUgE Why is this important? 🔸 Personal conversations are key. They can address doubts or misconceptions that general outreach can't. Around 1 in 10 pledgers were referred by someone they know! 🔸 You can help shift cultural norms. By normalizing conversations about effective giving, you’re helping to make it a norm and a priority.
