🌳Only 14% of the UK public is aware that their #pension could be funding #deforestation. Our new animated video, #SavingJane, released today in partnership with Make My Money Matter, Global Witness, Rewriting Earth and endorsed by Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE Founder - The Jane Goodall Institute, aims to raise public awareness of this critical link. 🪵The video focuses on the Sumatran rainforest in #Indonesia, where only nine percent of the original tropical rainforest remains. Vast swathes have been lost to palm oil, pulp and paper production. To avoid other forests in Indonesia and across the world meeting the same fate, we need to see stronger action from pension providers. 💷Two-thirds of the UK's top 20 workplace pension providers still do not have a public deforestation policy. And on a global level, Global Canopy’s research reveals that three-quarters of financial institutions with strong net-zero commitments are yet to publish a policy. We urge pension providers to publish deforestation policies and develop action plans to tackle deforestation in their portfolios: https://lnkd.in/ezBu8RmK Read more: https://lnkd.in/e8WhMxUV

🪓Deforestation causes 11% of annual global emissions and 3.7 million hectares of tropical forest were destroyed in 2023. Every moment is crucial as the world needs to step up and actively tackle the #climatecrisis and #natureloss together. 📑The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) was signed in 2022 to halt and reverse #biodiversity loss by 2030. But where do we currently stand on #forest protection and restoration? 🔍The latest report of the Forest Declaration Assessment - which tracks progress toward halting and reversing #deforestation by 2030 – launches tomorrow. 💡Find the details of the report launch here: www.forestdeclaration.org

🍃 "Nature-related risks demand solutions and give rise to new opportunities. But it's important to keep the discussion surrounding nature-risks grounded in a deep understanding of the existing #nature impacts and dependencies, instead of getting distracted by the other opportunities,” Niki Mardas, our executive director, spoke at the #WorldBiodiversitySummit at #ClimateWeekNYC last week. 🗣 The panel discussion focused on how data-driven solutions can support businesses and investors in measuring and managing nature-related risk and featured Tony Goldner, William Mason and Rhian-Mari Thomas OBE. 🌿 “Biodiversity is not a service; it is infrastructure and we depend on this infrastructure,” said Dr. Rita Mesquita, Brazil's National Secretariat for Biodiversity, Forest and Animal Rights, talking about the challenges and perspectives for #biodiversity in #Brazil in the lead-up to #COP30. 🌳 Zero #deforestation must be ensured across all biomes in Brazil to mitigate climate change and secure long-term economic stability, food security, and water resources. 📑 As Brazil works toward fulfilling #PresidentLula’s zero-deforestation pledge by 2030, the private sector needs to align with the national goals to meet the #ParisAgreement targets. 🌳 Despite some progress, #deforestation action by the financial industry is still insufficient: 75% of major financial institutions lack a deforestation policy. 📢 In the lead-up to #COP16, this webinar with Climate & Company, in partnership with Global Canopy and Swedish pension fund Andra AP-fonden (AP2), on 14 October at 3pm BST (4pm CET) will focus on accelerating finance sector action using existing data and tools. ☑ Acting on deforestation can help the finance sector to achieve the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. 🔎 The Global Biodiversity Framework urges the financial sector to actively monitor, assess and disclose biodiversity-related risks within their operations, supply chains and portfolios. ⚡ 🌳 💼🍂 This afternoon, some of our members joined us for a members-only workshop on deforestation risk assessment in investment and insurance portfolios. Together with Global Canopy this two-afternoon workshop session aims to help understand and map risk by elaborating on the link between deforestation and financial impacts and using this to inform risk management. In today’s workshop we explored the following points: 🌵 Understand the physical, transition and systemic risks posed by deforestation and the essential role the finance sector plays in preventing and mitigating risks 🐙 Understand how deforestation risk measurement connects to new regulatory and voluntary disclosure requirements e.g. TNFD, CSRD and Swiss climate related disclosure regulation 🦚 Awareness of where to find the guidance, tools and data available to assess nature related dependencies and impacts in relation to deforestation and beyond 🐘 Start to identify profiles of clients/holdings with likely high exposure to deforestation risk within their portfolios Thank you to James Hulse, Helen Beddow and Veronica Baker for putting together this afternoon’s session!
