About us
The Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) is an international network of sustainable communities and initiatives on every inhabitable continent. GEN serves as umbrella organization for ecovillages, intentional communities, transition towns and ecologically-minded, community-driven individuals worldwide. Network members include large networks like Sarvodaya (2,000 active sustainable villages in Sri Lanka); the Federation of Damanhur in Italy and Nimbin in Australia; small rural ecovillages like Gaia Asociación in Argentina and Huehuecoyotl, Mexico; urban rejuvenation projects like Los Angeles EcoVillage and Christiania in Copenhagen; permaculture design sites such as Crystal Waters, Australia, Cochabamba, Bolivia and Barus, Brazil; and educational centres such as Findhorn in Scotland, Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales, Earthlands in Massachusetts, and many more.

🌍 How the Sundarbans Ecovillage Project is Building Resilience Against Natural Disasters 🌿 In one of the most cyclone-prone regions of the world, the Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) is leading a powerful transformation. Since 2015, their Ecovillage project has empowered local communities with sustainable housing, green businesses, and life-changing education. The result? A resilient, thriving community where hope now thrives alongside sustainability. But this is just one story in a global movement. The Ecovillage Resilience Project—a 2-year research initiative led by the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN)—brought together 20 ecovillages in over 18 countries. Together, these communities have explored and implemented resilience strategies in some of the most vulnerable regions on the planet. From Africa to Europe, Asia to the Americas, each ecovillage contributes unique wisdom and innovation. The Sundarbans community is now a beacon of hope. With safe drinking water, solar energy, organic farming, and environmental stewardship, they are writing a new chapter in climate resilience. Join us in celebrating their journey and the many other communities forging a path toward a more sustainable future. ✨ To see more stories of ecovillage resilience, visit ecovillage.org/resilience

🌍 Celebrating the milestones of GEN Europe! See which ecovillages and orgs are celebrating their birthdays this year. Over the past year, our ecovillage network has grown stronger, with member communities marking incredible milestones. From LOES Landsforeningen for Økosamfund in Denmark celebrating 30 years, to GEN Germany, GEN Netherlands, and GEN Global ecovillage network Ukraine hitting 10, 10, and 5 year anniversaries—our movement is thriving! Notable ecovillages like Los Portales, Torri Superiore , and Tamera Healing Biotope I also celebrated landmark anniversaries. And in Ukraine, the completion of the Busha Toloka community house stands as a beacon of hope and resilience. We’re also excited to welcome a new membership category "ecoprojects", opening doors to more regenerative initiatives, such as #urbancoliving, #peramculturefarms, and #ecotourism destinations. In celebrating another rotation as a global ecovillage network, we honor all of the experience and wisdom that we have to stand on. Ross and Hildur Jackson from Denmark were the driving forces in creating the GEN network 29 years ago. 🍃 "Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing." - Arundhati Roy The ecovillage movement can be seen as a deliberate strategic response to the destructive consequences of a dominant worldview that is simply not working for the vast majority of people or Gaia. 🤝 We can change society from the bottom up and we are doing it. However, we cannot do it alone. Ecovillages provide models for a lifestyle that reduces our ecological footprint while delivering a better quality of life—one, which is possible in all countries of the world, and can lead to global justice, solidarity and cooperation. 🏵️ CELEBRATE WITH US! 🌟Tell the next person you see about the global network 🌟Create your own celebration and reflect on your time with the network 🌟Share a photo of your community, tagging us #Ecovillage #GlobalEcovillageNetwork #Regenerative
