Last week was an important week for the GLOBAL wind and renewables industry as a whole. Here's why… The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and Global Renewables Alliance (GRA) teams were split across two very important events - The first-ever Global Renewables Summit, and Wind Energy Hamburg, one of the industry’s largest conferences. Across both events, there was an overriding consensus that international collaboration was more crucial than ever in growing the wind and renewable energy market, in terms of volume of projects and also geographic diversification. You might be surprised that this message is coming from all over the world, including certain countries currently involved in trade tensions... We welcomed EU President Ursula von der Leyen, Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto PHD, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, Mike Bloomberg, COP28 President Dr. Sultan Al Jaber and COP29 Presidents Mukhtar Babayev and their call to mobilse the highest political levels and global institutions to accelerate the deployment of renewables. The Global Renewables Summit was a first of its kind event gathering the most influential people across the key areas for the energy transition for a series of solutions-focused roundtable discussions: -Supply Chains and Trade with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala GCON, Director-General of the World Trade Organization -Finance with Multilateral Development Banks from Europe, USA, Africa, Latin America and Asia - Grids with the Green Grids Initiative - Permitting and Social Acceptance with civil society and environmental groups Behind these closed doors is where we translated the goal to triple renewable energy capacity into reality - identifying challenges and showcasing the tremendous opportunity this goal represents, particularly for governments, and the economies and people they ultimately represent. Oh yeah, and there’s that climate thing to deal with as well… We also launched our #NDC Campaign with a call to action letter signed by over 100 organisations asking governments to #NowDeliverChange through ambitious, specific, actionable NDCs (‘Nationally Determined Contributions’ - UN speak for carbon emissions reduction commitments) they must submit ahead of COP30 next year in Brazil, to provide the much needed clarity for significant investment to follow. This week at the #GlobalRenewablesSummit in New York, 2 high-level roundtables tackled critical themes for #tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030, held by Global Renewables Alliance, Bloomberg Philanthropies, BloombergNEF, World Trade Organization and UNEZA. The #Financing Roundtable, chaired by Sonia Dunlop and opened by @Cristina Duarte (UN), convened MDBs, industry leaders, governments, and financiers to discuss unlocking greater financing at lower costs in emerging markets. BloombergNEF presented fresh numbers showing that despite $623 billion in renewable investments this year (another record), as trends continue we would still fall 30% short of reaching our 2030 goal. Key points included de-risking, cross-sectoral policies, utility creditworthiness, and expanding concessional finance to unlock greater financing at lower costs in EMDEs. The second roundtable, chaired by Ben Backwell and opened by WTO Director General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala GCON, focused on #strengtheningresilientsupplychains. Discussions centered on the need for enhanced international collaboration, innovation, skills development, and transparent trade policies to secure a smooth and equitable energy transition. Huge thanks to Bloomberg Philanthropies, BloombergNEF and key colleagues @Priya Shankar, Liv Cowgill, Rebecca Fleischman Dhawan, Annya Schneider, Luiza Demôro, Oliver Metcalfe, and GRA colleagues Bruce Douglas Beniamin Strzelecki, Juan Tomás -. Emerson Clarke Felix Marchal, and Ben Pabst for their outstanding efforts in making this happen. Looking forward to bringing these insights to COP29 and COP30. #ClimateWeekNYC #GlobalRenewablesSummit #3xRenewables #EnergyTransition
