Let's #FixTheDigitalDivide - for good.
About us
Good Things Foundation is a charity that supports digitally and socially excluded people to improve their lives through digital. Digital technology and community action is at the heart of everything we do. We bring together thousands of community partners to make up the National Digital Inclusion Network, reaching deep into communities to help people across the UK gain the support and skills they need to change their lives and overcome social challenges. Our online learning platform Learn My Way - used in Digital Inclusion Hubs throughout the network - helps thousands of people each year to gain basic digital skills and go on to further informal and formal learning. Through our research we discover which digital solutions really make a difference to people’s lives. This means we can scale up what works through our network and by working with our partners so that together we increase the impact that we all have. We use this shared experience and knowledge to help Government and other organisations better understand the role that they can play in creating a fully digital nation. We believe that digital technology can support equality of opportunity, and ensure everyone can participate fully in today’s society.

It's almost #GetOnlineWeek - so we took the opportunity to visit YMCA Newcastle with Sir Chris Bryant, Minister of State at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). After a busy summer convening experts at roundtables we hosted with DSIT to feed into the Government's thinking on digital inclusion; we were delighted to introduce Minister Bryant to some of the incredible community organisations in the National Digital Inclusion Network, who are supporting people with varied digital inclusion needs: from skills to access, in a friendly and inviting local established space. The oldest independent youth charity in Newcastle, and a member of the National Digital Inclusion Network; YMCA Newcastle have embedded digital skills and the National Databank into their core offers - ensuring holistic support for every member of the community. Minister Bryant heard how people seeking employment are taught essential digital skills such as how to complete tricky online forms to apply for jobs; organise their finances and benefits and more. We met with young people who have been supported to stay safe and navigate the online world in youth services; who are now being supported to look for their next opportunities online. The digital inclusion hub also runs a community fridge, and helps new mums and young people learn how to make healthy meals by finding recipes online - matched with the ingredients in store. This vital neighbourhood resource supports young people straight from school too. It's great to see that this government recognises that digital exclusion damages lives, communities and economic growth - and is committed to continuing to engaging with people supported and those responding to the issue.

Recapping on a few more discussions we had at The Labour Party conference last week... Our CEO Helen Milner OBE joined leaders and policymakers including Chris Bryant MP and Paul Morris from Vodafone in a private roundtable discussion on how digital technology can support Labour’s five missions. The discussion covered fostering digital literacy, building the right skills in government teams and creating infrastructure to support Labour's ambitious mission-driven model. A huge thanks to Labour Together for hosting this event! Continuing to call for digital literacy and equity, Helen joined a private roundtable hosted by 56˚ North, alongside Bridget Phillipson MP and Catherine McKinnell MP. The session, “Connecting Labour’s Missions,” focused on the role of digital technology and initiatives like Skills England in advancing Labour’s five missions Throughout all conferences and discussions, we advocated for the ABCs of digital inclusion - read more about it: https://lnkd.in/eeS8wi3V #FixTheDigitalDivide! #LPC24 #LAB2024

Advocacy Manager Hannah Whelan here, reporting from The Conservative Party conference.🫡 From attending panels on the likes of Tory policy and reducing economic inactivity, to meeting new and old friends alike, it's been an interesting few days here in Birmingham. And while the party conference season is now winding down, our mission to #FixTheDigitalDivide isn't! Today is a new day to keep on top of the government and opposition to keep digital inclusion in the agenda. #CPC24
