The tragic news of Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei’s murder has shaken many of us deeply. For those in our team working in the medical profession, it’s a painful reminder of the kinds of traumatic experiences that can occur within healthcare settings—moments marked by intense pressure and the emotional toll of witnessing loss and suffering. One of our senior clinicians recalled a similarly distressing case they encountered years ago while working in a UK A&E. That night, they lost both the perpetrator and the victim—a scene marked by the kind of visceral, harrowing sounds that training alone can never prepare you for. What struck them then, and clearly still resonates today, is not just the trauma of the incident itself, but how unprepared they and their colleagues were for the emotional aftermath. There was no debrief, no space to process, and no structured psychological support. They simply moved on to the next emergency, leaving the events of that night to linger, unspoken. On World Mental Health Day, we want to take this opportunity to ask some vital questions: 🔹 Are we, as a healthcare community, doing enough to ensure that our colleagues in high-stress environments—Emergency Care, Trauma, Operating Theatres, and Obstetrics—have access to routine psychological support? 🔹 Are structured mental health services part of the wellbeing packages in our hospitals and clinics, whether in the NHS or private sector? 🔹 Shouldn’t regular counselling and emotional support be seen as an essential part of protecting those working in these high-pressure areas? Providing exceptional care for others should never come at the cost of our own mental wellbeing. If we want to foster resilience and prevent burnout, structured psychological support must become a core part of healthcare. Let’s work together to make sure that those who dedicate themselves to caring for others receive the support they need and deserve. #WorldMentalHealthDay #SupportOurCarers #HealthcareWellbeing #MentalHealthMatters
