Interesting new study shows how mobile electric fences can be used to support a peaceful coexistence between people and elephants in Gabon, but only if local contexts and the perspectives of farmers are taken into account. The research by Katarzyna Mikolajczak Christian Mikolo Yobo Eric Chehoski Claudel Tshibangu and Maurice Schutgens is based on a study of the experiences of early recipients of a mobile electric fencing programme in Gabon. It examined what has worked for the users, the challenges they encountered, and the potential impact of these challenges on the programme’s viability. https://lnkd.in/e_CqkMxk

A new paper out today, the first large-scale empirical analysis of the health impacts of air pollution on pets, has found that “high levels of air pollution have led to significant increases in the number of vet visits for both cats and dogs.” Using five years of data on over seven million visits to veterinary practices across the UK, the study concludes that “reducing pollution levels to meet recommendations set by the World Health Organization would result in eighty thousand fewer vet visits each year.” If such improvements were made, the resulting annual savings in pet care utilisation costs alone would be “roughly £15,000,000, with the total economic benefits likely to be considerably higher.” The study was undertaken by Olivier Deschenes Stephen Jarvis Akshaya Jha and Alan Radford https://lnkd.in/eeA76xNt

How aligned are the banks with the Paris agreement temperature goals? Algirdas Brochard, Banking Project Lead at TPI Centre, explains the score chart below. In brief, 🔸Only 19% of the banks’ sectoral pathways are aligned with 1.5C or Below 2oC benchmarks in the medium term (2028-2035). 🔸Only 3% are aligned with the more stringent 1.5C benchmark. 🔸 Most have 2030 decarbonisation targets in line with the recommendations of the #NetZeroBankingAlliance (NZBA), but many lack short- and long-term targets to map a clear pathway to net zero by 2050.
