Balancing a career as a doctor while caring for his injured 66-year-old mother at home was no easy task but led Dr. Ben Maruthappu to founding Cera and it's this journey that made him our Great British Entrepreneur of the Year in 2024! Dr. Ben Maruthappu says: “I saw the difficulties in the sector firsthand, not as a doctor or someone in policy, but as a person going through the process of organising care for a loved one. What I realised when I took a closer look at the sector is that people are really well-intentioned – carers, care staff – they want to go above and beyond for the people that they’re caring for, but they’re limited in the tools and by the tools of their organisation". By partnering with hundreds of UK local authorities and the NHS, Cera works by allowing family members and healthcare providers to collect, monitor and react to a range of vital health signs in real time. Its AI-driven app has an aim to reduce hospitalisations, ultimately easing the burden on the NHS and saving an estimated £1bn a year by 2026. “We built an algorithm that can predict 83 per cent of falls a week before they even happen,” Dr. Ben Maruthappu says. 📈Cera now cares for over 2m patients a month – an average of nearly 60,000 appointments a day – employs 10,000 people and is hitting annualised revenue of £300m. It was an absolute privilege seeing Ben pick up this trophy last year and I can't wait to see who will be crowned the Allica Bank Great British Entrepreneur of the Year for 2025 🙌

Throwback to 2019 when we celebrated some incredible entrepreneurs at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards & Community including Dr Nik Kotecha OBE DL In this picture, alongside Nik, are the founders of some amazing brands like Grenade, Beauty Kitchen, Pip & Nut, Charley Chau, Imployable, and Beer Hawk. I hadn’t seen Nik since his win, but earlier this year, thanks to a dinner with Steven Thai of Ocean King, I reconnected with him. Steven spoke so highly of his brilliant neighbour who was an entrepreneur and philanthropist and I was blown away to discover it was Nik. Hearing about the amazing work he’s been doing through the Randal Charitable Foundation to support entrepreneurs and improve lives has been truly inspiring. Fast forward to today, and I’m thrilled to announce that the Randal Foundation Entrepreneur of the Year Award will be joining the Great British Entrepreneur Awards & Community lineup this year, sponsored by Nik’s incredible foundation. This award is a true testament to how purpose-driven entrepreneurship is shaping our world for the better – recognising those who not only succeed in business but also drive positive social impact.
